Tiny nuclear explosions will power aircrafts, reveals a new patent from Boeing.


  • Boeing has patented nuclear powered aircrafts. The engines of these aircrafts include a unique propulsion system.


    A stream of pellets containing nuclear material such as Deutrium or Tritium is fed into a hot-stop within a thruster of the aircraft. Then multiple high powered laser beams are all focused onto the hot-spot. The pellet is instantly vaporized and the high temperature causes a nuclear fusion reaction. In effect, it causes a tiny nuclear explosion that scatters atoms and high energy neutrons in all directions. This flow of material is concentrated to exit out of the thruster thus propelling the aircraft forward with great force.


    And this is where Boeing has done something extremely clever. The inner walls of the thurster are coated with a fissile material like Uranium-238 that undergoes a nuclear fission upon being struck by the high energy neutrons. This releases enormous energy in the form of heat. A coolant is circulated along the inner walls to pick up this heat and power a turbine which in turn generates huge amounts of electric power. And guess what this electric power is used for? To power the same lasers that created the electric power! In effect, this space-craft is self-powered with virtually no external energy needed.


    Soon, tiny nuclear bombs exploding inside a plane may be business as usual.

  • Foreseeable future is very short, especially in blackswan technology like LENR, especially given the opposition that prevented most funded research.


    It is true that linear improvement toward LENR plane will be slow, as Rossi and pathoskeptic says (>20years).
    anyway just take a pipistrel, an e-fan, replace one passenger by a lenr reactor and a brayton turbine, torture a gang of 100 engineers with a billion budget, until it works, and you have it in one year (given E-cat or equivalent is stable and reliable) flying over the atlantic.


    for flying in a bomb, a normal fighter is an unstable plane with a ton of explosive fuel, ammunitions.
    early transatlantic boats or planes were even less safe, and don't talk of Saturn V bomb.


    problems is however for the neighbours... who will allow a bomb to fly around his home?

  • Well, unlike LENR, inertial confinement fusion has scientific grounds and may be worth investigating.
    But it will not power airplanes in any foreseeable future, no matter what yogi says.


    For once Pathoskeptic is surely correct.... that it won't power airplanes. Unfortunately, "p" is wrong about the "worth" of inertial confinement. It is at best a welfare program for photonics, nuclear, engineering and physics researchers and affiliated contractors. As an example of the problem: At a 276.5 watts per cubic meter (that is in a "device" weighing in at 150 metric tonnes per cubic meter), inertial confinement already reliably produces about 20% of the energy of a small lawn mower-- Where? In the core of our Sun.... (the core being the inner 0.25 of the full solar radius, or inner 1.5% volume of the sun, at a pressure of 265 X 10^9 bar, where 99% of the solar "hot fusion" is thought to take place).


    With billions spent, inertial confinement over the last decades of development on Earth, has very little to show, and much less to promise.


    The only realistic hope to exceed the energy and power density of fossil fuels or storage batteries is frankly something akin to cold fusion / LENR / CANR.

    Exactly, this is a very small segment of the population that pilot these devices. Few people use flight for transportation because of inherent fear of flying. Flying an atomic bomb will reduce the number even further. Commercial use of atomic bomb flight for profit is a pipe dream.
