International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (available online 14 july 2015) publishes a paper by Leif Holmlid and Sveinn Olafsson
"Spontaneous ejection of high-energy particles from ultra-dense deuterium D(0)"

Some claims possible link with [lexicon]Edmund Storms theory[/lexicon]? is the NAE found?

Direct observation of particles with energy >10 MeV/u from laser-induced fusion in ultra-dense deuterium
    Leif Holmlid

Nuclear fusion in ultra-dense deuterium D(-1) induced by 0.2 J pulses with 5 ns pulse length ejects ions with energies in the MeV range. The ns-resolved signal to a collector can be observed directly on an oscilloscope, showing ions arriving with energies in the range 2-14 MeV u-1 at flight times 12-100 ns, mainly protons from the fusion process and deuterons ejected by proton collisions. Electrons and photons give almost no contribution to the fast signal. The observed signal at several mA peak current corresponds to 1x10^13 particles released per laser shot and to an energy release > 1 J assuming isotropic formation and average particle energy of 3 MeV as observed. A movable slit close to the laser target gives spatial resolution of the signal generation, showing almost only fast ions from the point of laser impact and penetrating photons from the plasma outside the laser impact point. The initial photon pulse from the fusion process is observed by a photomultiplier detector on-line.

He produced many papers beside LENR, but in that domain...

  • Holmlid is one of the LENR people I have most sympathy with. You need to realise, however, that what he proposes is dramatically incompatible with all other LENR work. If he is right then one form of cold fusion does exist, but that has absolutely no relationship to the other claims.

    Specifically:
Holmlid claims that Coulomb threshold is not a problem because deuterium (and deuterium alone) can form a 5th phase of matter which is 100s of times more dense than normal. This would seem impossible from QM and Holmlid has some hand waving arguments (suggested but not developed by Winterberg):

Holmlid's work is not the theory, but repeated experiments in which he observes things that he claims are explained by high energy particles from quite complex, but cold, systems.

The papers get published because Holmlid makes a good case for an experimental anomaly here. However his proposed hypothesis is highly extraordinary, and other more mundane solutions are more likely.

Why do I like this work? He claims high energy products as evidence, so the evidence is both more direct than excess heat, and also less extraordinary - all Homlid needs is an extraordinary way to circumvent Coulomb barrier, not another even more extraordinary way to dispose of the expected high energy products.

However it is almost certainly wrong. But deserves people looking seriously at his results and either giving an alternate explanation or investigating further.

  • The 100 times density in this theory sounds similar to the special type of gravity claimed by the Lipinski's in their theory explained in some detail in their WIPO patent application. Exactly the same result, that is the overcoming of coulombic repulsion at much lower energies than expected by conventional theories. Perhaps these are two aspects of a common phenomenon (?). One clear difference, Lipinskis use protons exclusively and their target, so far, is lithium.

I have not read any details of "supergravity" which might be another similar idea. Is this all a coincidence, or an example of some nascent unity in a new area of previously overlooked physics?

    usual misinformation...

  • I doubt that fusion of deuterium is at the bottom of the explosive reaction seen in the Leif Holmlid experiment. I believe that what Holmlid has reproduced is what takes place in the Papp engine developed in the 1960s. Papp first produced this reaction using water, but changed his technology in the 1980s to use noble gases when the water eroded the inside of his cylinder.

He turned to noble gases to produce the nano particles that cluster together and then explode under the stimulation of an electric arc. I doubt that those noble gases would support a fusion reaction as Holmlid imagines. There is coulumb explosion of nano particle based clusters involved that produce shock waves and the expansion of gas but no heat. The reaction is most probably a LENR reaction involving surface plasmon polaritons centered inside the nano particle cluster that transfers it energy nuclear energy production to the expansion of nanoparticle clusters either based on hydrogen or noble gases in which the reaction occurs.

Holmlid has not explained how the gamma radiation is mitigated. In SPP theory, such mitigation occurs in the SPP coherent soliton before a Bosenova releases the energy to the cluster.
