  • Chatgpt is cool

How can we use ChatGPT to promote the LENR field? I think there are possibilities if we are creative!

International Summit on Condensed Matter Physics (ISCMP2023) has been scheduled on June 15-17, 2023 at Paris, France. The three-day conference will include plenary and keynote lectures by experienced experts and Oral talks, Poster presentations, Workshops and Exhibitions.

The main objective of the meeting is to promote contacts between scientists working in Condensed Matter Physics, in order to share experiences, to spread the latest information on progress in their specialties and related fields, to gain visibility for their research, to put young researchers interacting with their peers and seniors, and to develop professionally.

We sincerely hope that ISCMP2023 will serve as an international platform for meeting researchers from around the world, establishing new collaborations, and broadening professional contact.

We look forward to welcoming you to Paris for this inspiring congress in 2023!

    Sincerely,

    Riya Seth | Program Coordinator

  • Quoting CNN:

A UK fusion scientist told CNN that the result of the US breakthrough is promising, but also shows more work needs to happen to make fusion able to generate electricity on a commercial scale.

“They have worked on the design and the makeup of the target and the shape of the energy pulse to get much better results,” Tony Roulstone, from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, told CNN.

“The opposing argument is that this result is miles away from actual energy gain required for the production of electricity. Therefore, we can say (it) is a success of the science but a long way from providing useful energy.”

  • Get ChatGPT to do your assignments? Should academics worry about AI essays?

“It’s looking a lot like the end of essays as an assignment for education,” says law professor Lilian Edwards about ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot that creates uncannily natural text in response to homework and exam-style questions. Others are less worried, pointing out that students have long been able to outsource essays to human ghostwriters. ChatGPT text can also be readily identified by its made-up quotes and irrelevant references. Lecturers could respond by assigning work that prioritizes critical thinking — something that ChatGPT can’t yet do.

I wonder how the academic plagiarism software companies like TurnItIn will respond. Perhaps they could offer a service that used AI to generate hundreds of different permutations of the essay question, and then fed them into ChatGPT to cross reference with the student's work. It wouldn't be perfect, but perhaps these AI tools are still predictable enough to catch out.

ETA: Another possibility could be to make essays auditable. I can imagine a future where a student is required to download a small program onto their computer, and then direct that program to the directory where university work is completed. When a student is working in those directories, the program takes a snapshot every 30 seconds and uploads it to a university server. Thus, a lecturer could go back and look at not only the construction of the final written piece, but also how the references were saved as pdfs into the folders, how they were marked up over time etc. A student could add notes about their process for the essay - eg. 'I printed out my references and read/marked them up by hand, I'll keep these for you incase you want to see them.'

It might be the end of the process of essay writing as we know it. But requiring much more stringent documentation of process could be the answer. Although, this might not be practical in all circumstances, or for all subjects.

  • It makes a lot of neutrons like ITER thus it will be a no go...

Tantalum is interesting..the AuTa4 hohlraum jacket at Livermore is probably best kept very small

A jacket of 181Ta, irradiated by the intense high-energy neutron flux from an exploding thermonuclear weapon, would transmute into the radioactive isotope 182Ta

with a half-life of 114.43 days and produce approximately 1.12 MeV of gamma radiation,

  • Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF) extending application deadline for current £70 million competition window

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is delighted to announce that the spend deadline for project completion for the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF) has been extended from 31 March 2025 to 31 March 2027. The deadline for submitting applications for the current IETF Phase 2: Autumn 2022 competition window has also been extended from 13 January to 17 February 2023. We will continue hosting our series of stakeholder clinics throughout the competition window to help and support businesses interested in applying for IETF funding. Our Virtual Technology Marketplace is also live and businesses can register now.

Businesses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland can now bid for a share of up to £70 million in grant funding through the competition window. The competition will provide grant funding towards the costs of feasibility and engineering studies, energy efficiency deployment projects and deep decarbonisation deployment projects. This is the last currently planned application window and applicants are encouraged to apply if they have a suitable project.

To find out more about the £70 million IETF Phase 2: Autumn 2022 competition, view the applicant guidance and make an application for funding, please visit our competition page.
