  • A little mre than a year after the first success of a covid-19 vaccine in a clinical trial, a sense of dread has struck much of the world. The Omicron variant of the coronavirus, first publicly identified on November 24th, may be able to circumvent the defences built up by vaccination or infection with covid-19. The World Health Organisation declared that Omicron poses a “very high” global risk. The boss of Moderna, a vaccine-maker, warned that existing jabs may struggle against the heavily mutated new variant. Faced with the ghastly prospect of yet more lockdowns, closed borders and nervous consumers, investors have reacted by selling shares in airlines and hotel chains. The price of oil has slumped by roughly $10 a barrel, the kind of drop often associated with a looming recession.

  • Convection and conduction are minimal because there is a vacuum between the electrolyte and the water bath. Radiation dominates. There is a vacuum even in the "window" at the bottom with no silver (no mirror).


    Miles measured a little conduction with a cell that was made some years before his experiment. A little air had leaked into the vacuum portion of the cell. See p. 12.

    Ok, had a better look at this and see how it should work, which is fairly well.


    The spectral (and total) emissivity of borosilicate glass is fairly high in the IR range at room to 100 C, typically somewhere between 0.7 and 0.85, based on a quick review of the literature. If the slivering works well, at the un-silvered part of the dewar, the IR should jump the vacuum gap and be absorbed by the outer layer again at 70 to 85 % of the radiated heat due to matching spectral emissivity profiles (same material) and a lower outer jacket temperature (water cooled, conduction/convection). The so-heated inner wall of the outermost dewar wall then conducts the heat to the outside wall, which is in contact with the water jacket.

    The remainder of the emissivity, the 0.3 to 0.15 not accounted for by absorption, is almost entirely transparency, but for IR transmission to pass through to the outside of the apparatus, it must pass through the absorption band again (through the inner wall, then the outer wall) in order to leave from the interior and pass through to the water. 2.3 to 9%, based on the emissivity above, of transmitted IR might get through to the water directly from the cell. If any of the emissivity is affected by reflection at each interaction, then that will reduce the final transmission value and effectively become mostly absorbed heat (Each reflection between glasses being 70% to 85% absorbed, or even reflected back into the apparatus to start over again).


    The unsilvered dewar vacuum jacket outer glass cannot radiate IR any distance when in intimate contact with water of effectively the same temperature, instead the entire water bath enclosure collectively radiates any IR that finally escapes into the environment, (remember that it is also absorbing heat radiation at the same rate from the environment if it is the same temperature as the environment).

    Wrong. You mentioned Fig.6 of the "Simplicity paper", where the excess enthalpy Qf is calculated only up to about 65 °C.

    Basically, you are saying that one of the oldest, most reliable and widely used experimental techniques does not work. You are wrong. That fact that you think you are right and every scientist in the last 180 years is wrong tells us that you are an egomaniac, you have no grasp of reality, and you suffer from an extreme case of the Dunning Kruger effect.

  • So, ultimately almost all of the dewar heat ends up in the water jacket. The thermal characteristics of the F&P dewar are primarily aimed at keeping the escaping heat in the bath and not letting it escape elsewhere.

    Further there is a clear signal for pre-time birth among vaccinated woman and in correlation ultra low birth weight. Here I would like to see the absolute numbers.

  • Right, it would mostly try to convect near the cap.

    Right. Without the window at the bottom, nearly all of the heat goes out near the cap, which is difficult to measure, and unpredictable. Some people tried to use ordinary, fully silvered Dewar vessels as calorimeter cells. That's a bad idea. As you say, all the heat ends up going out the top.

    The excuse that India is a "young" country will not hold (and truthfully was never a good argument). Age has less impact on infection rate, yes mortality rate but not infection rate so much. India's infection rate is way down.....


    The excuse that herd immunity is the reason will not compute because the vaccinations should still work! As would the previous infections in the rest of the world. Which again was a feeble excuse in India. I really doubt that India has more immune % than other countries when adding vaccinations and infections together.


    If the Ivermectin states continue to succeed in spite of Omicron, It will be very difficult for the mRNA warriors to berate the Ivermectin treatment.... but of course they must try!


    If India follows and Omicron explodes there as well... it will likewise cast doubt on "Ziverdo" effectiveness and rightly so.... we will have to wait and see.... unfortunately.


    Iin the meantime, I still have my Ivermectin available. No risk and better than the "do nothing" alternate.

    Yes, F&P and every other scientist going back to J. P. Joule, as I said. Isoperibolic calorimetry works. It is reliable over a wide range of power levels. See:

    Sure. Or just ordinary isoperibolic calorimetry. That is what most calorimeters look like. See the one Bockris used:


    A Look at Experiments


    Note the golf balls floating on the top. That is a constant temperature bath. If you cannot afford one, maybe just run a small stream of tap water into the tank and have it drain off.


    As long as you calibrate, you will know if the thing is working. Boil off some water with a resistance heater and see how much heat is captured by the instrument. You know the heat of vaporization of water is 540 cal/g, so all you have to do is compare to that. (Don't confuse calories with joules, which I always do!)


    F&P's calorimeter was extraordinarily sensitive, with a quick response, and a very wide range. Jean-Paul Biberian called it a microscope for heat. Most calorimeters, isoperibolic, flow, or even Seebeck are not as sensitive. A microcalorimeter can measure milliwatts, but not watts. It has a narrow range.

    As described in the paper, I simulated Joule's 19th century calorimeter with an air-cooled cylinder in a house open to outside air, with a digital thermometer good to 0.1°C. That would be a nutty way to do calorimetry in a real experiment. However, as you see, the results were remarkably consistent.

    There is not the slightest chance ivermectin works to prevent or cure COVID. That has now been established beyond doubt by the double-blind tests and by general experience in India and other countries. Ivermectin has no direct effect on COVID, and no anti-viral qualities. HOWEVER, there were a few slightly positive double-blind tests in India and some other third world countries. A person who looked closely at the data suggests that these results might be real because many patients in India have parasites, which are often not diagnosed. Parasites increase the severity of any disease, and the death rate. Ivermectin removes the parasites and improves the prognosis. So, if there is no chance you have worms or any other parasite, there is no point to taking ivermectin.

    The statistics from India cannot be trusted to reach any conclusion. Some of them show no deaths at all, for months, in districts with millions of people. However, some of the clinical tests in India may have yielded good data, and might indicate a slight improvement with ivermectin. If that is real, there has to be a reason. The anti-parasitic effect of the drug is the only likely reason.

    Oh sure, no doubt, isoperibolic calorimetry works since the times of Joule, but only when it is properly used by reliable people.


    And, I know, it works for a wide range of power. However you wrote (1) that "It often showed massive heat, many times input power.", but you didn't provide any evidence of this. You only mentioned (2) Fig.6 in the "Simplicity paper", but everybody can see that the Qf values reported in those figures 6 are only a small fraction of the input power.


    The problem is not the isoperibolic method, nor the boil-off one, but the erroneous way they have been used by F&P.

    As is occurring in many low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs), TrialSite observes in Bangladesh that while vaccination rates are low, overall problems with COVID-19 have been minimal at least compared to many other nations. This observation was picked up recently by The Daily Telegraph. From November 20, 2021, to December 1, Bangladesh, one of the world’s most populated nations with 165 million, had only one death from COVID-19. This is a significant statistic in a generally poor country with pockets of considerable poverty and overcrowding. Many physicians known to TrialSite, such as Dr. Tarek Alam, were big ivermectin proponents—conducting several studies. One point of view among care providers is that ivermectin influenced this outcome. In Bangladesh, only 22% of the population has been vaccinated against covid, yet the death rate from the virus remains low at just over one percent. Bangladesh has a population of about 165 million but just over 27 thousand deaths from COVID-19. According to an interview with Dr. Alam, last year, ivermectin in Bangladesh combined with Doxycycline and various vitamins and minerals is known as “the People’s Drug.”


    Bangladesh experienced a few spikes during the COVID-19 pandemic, including a particularly bad one during the summer of 2021. Still, they have turned it around in a similar way as the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.


    According to aa.com, a website that deals specifically with South Asia, what’s happening in Bangladesh isn’t a fluke. A study was done and reported on in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and it found ivermectin has proven to be an effective treatment for people with covid. According to the study, patients being treated for covid with ivermectin for five days were 77% more likely to have “early viral clearance” after 14 days. Sixty-eight volunteers took part in the study.


    TrialSite has done extensive reporting on the use of ivermectin in Bangladesh, including interviews with Dr. Tarek Alam, a doctor and professor of medicine at Bangladesh Medical College, who has treated covid patients effectively with ivermectin. Dr. Alam confirmed the drug is used for 5 to 6 days as a treatment for coronavirus and almost all of his patients were cured.


    An August 2020 article in TrialSite cited a report in the Journal of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons, which published a report titled “A Case Series of 100 Covid 19 Patients Treated with A Combination of Ivermectin and Doxycycline”. This study evidenced that ivermectin can limit the spread of covid in a test tube and emphasized that more study is needed.


    Of course, many elite institutions in the West shunned the Bangladesh data, considering it not worthy of apex academic medical centers and research institutes. TrialSite is on the record that although 67 studies have been conducted with ivermectin—and a great many of them show positive data—medicinal “proof” may still be needed. However, with a known safety profile (it’s been used over a billion times in Africa to fight River Blindness), the prospect for use, at least in poorer nations, is intriguing. At least at currently recommended doses, the ivermectin safety record looks more compelling than Merck’s recently FDA-reviewed drug Molnupiravir.     So again, a developing country like Bangladesh has demonstrated it can combat a COVID-19 without mass vaccination and all of the social disruption wrought in the West. This, as always, begs the question: why is a readily available drug-like ivermectin, which has been proven effective against covid, so derided in the United States? Perhaps because ivermectin is cost-effective?

    Bangladesh was the first country doing an very successful Ivermectin Study. But they never implemented a prevention program like Uttar Pradesh. But the overall death rate is 10x lower than USA, what shows USA is a poor medical development country that cannot afford drugs and thus must relay on crappy vaccines...

  • ~One of my Grandchildren is stuck in Capetown and to add to her joy has now got Covid (unknown type) She should have been flying to Paris last Saturday, but that never happened. Now the only flights out of Capetown are domestic ones - you can't even fly to Egypt or Morocco.

    Happily word is they she isn't too sick and she is travelling with a crowd of other gap-year kids, so not alone.
