About Open sourcing it is the new way after the monopoly way that cannot work anymore (and slowed innovation when possible).
Being open source does not mean having no business model, and being open to everybody the same way.
There is the logic of ecosystem where people that share complementary interest for the technology to progress, work together selfishly, but even if open sourced the technology will be more accessible to those who collaborate with the ecosystem (give and take), than with freeriders.
The restriction is best if just implemented by nature of the collaboration, and not by laws or contracts.
It also mean you can lock some technology, while letting the core open source.A good minor patent can make more money than a huge disruptive technology that frighten everybody and cost much upfront.
Give the core engine for free, and sell the screws. -
