• Thorlabs' C-Series Thermal Power Sensors

Thorlabs, founded in 1989, emphasizes a high degree of vertical integration in its supply chain, manufacturing over 90% of its products in-house across 9 countries, ensuring quality and value.

At the moment anything with non US content has a supply chain headache..maybe Thorlabs' one is only a small one.. compared to Boeing's...

not a pleasant time for anyone doing technology development in the US

  • Traditionally scientific equipment imported to the US has had a total exemption from import duties. I am not sure of that is still the case. If Thor were to be hit by tariffs on component imports it would pay them to offshore the whole production process and claim the exemption.

Tariffs hit science labs: Trump’s levies raise cost of supplies

Import taxes on staples such as microscopes, glassware and computer chips will affect institutions already feeling financial strain.

The whole thing is a disaster. Inflationary in the short term, and impossible to imagine that Apple (for example) would quit manufacturing at Foxconn in China and spend a few billion $ building a factory in the US knowing that in 3.5 years time another president could change the rules again.

  • The whole thing is a disaster. Inflationary in the short term, and impossible to imagine that Apple (for example) would quit manufacturing at Foxconn in China and spend a few billion $ building a factory in the US knowing that in 3.5 years time another president could change the rules again.

No competent management team would ever underwrite reshoring a manufacturing capacity into the United States based on unit economics that only make sense assuming economy shattering tariffs remain in force.

  • Whether this was intentional or not, some things that these tariffs will disrupt are various methods of corporate tax avoidance.

One is Transfer Mispricing, where companies manipulate the apparent value of goods in a two (or more) stage import process, so as to minimise profit (and tax) in the destination country.

Another is cross charging of IP license fees between subsidiary companies, based in different countries, so as to (again) minimise apparent profits (and tax) in the destination country. The example below is European, but the same thing happens in the US.

Of course smaller companies, that can't play these tricks to avoid tax, will be hit too. And the end result will still be price rises. and/or businesses folding.

"Have you though about putting one one piece units into a test car and running it until it stops running...

RLM: I'm sure as soon as have one we're gonna do it.

    Q. [?????]

RLM: If everything stays on track, and the PV doesn't look like it's that big a problem and, so far I don't see any show stoppers. But you can guarantee that I'm just going to grab somebody's Tesla and rip it out and put it in there. You have to do it. I mean it's something you have to do. Or any other electric vehicle, the Volt or whatever."
