  • That is a good analogy. Maybe not the way you meant it. There were many different approaches to building airplanes circa 1900, such as A. G. Bell, and Maxim and Lilienthal. Those were smart people. Their ideas deserved respect, although the efforts did not make much progress. However, in 1906 the Wright patent was issued. All successful airplanes after that have been based on their discovery, which was 3-axis control. Also, all of them have wings with chambers similar to this, and similar length to width ratios. These are very different from Lilienthal and other early attempts. The Wrights were superb engineers and they had rigorous proof these were the best chambers and ratios, at the low speed their airplane was designed for.

  • Building Nuclear Fission Reactors, and ITER on earthquake zones in Fukushima or on the San Andreas Fault does not seem to be in any way a sensible option. Shoved up on Cheap Land, same problem with the new reactors at Sizewell in the East or the new one in Somerset being built on a well-known flood zone both from the sea and from the land! I have heard that the French Co EDF have taken over from the original Chinese Contract which began the project. Huawei must be pissed off. :)

  • So I think the way ahead is a bit like the dual fuel prius motor car to use a fission core made from pitch-blende (Natural Uranium) to fire up a nickel or Pd - hydrogen/deuterium cold-fusion core. It can easily be done in theory especially since smaller fission reactors for energy (ie electricity) production are being considered. If we can build sufficient submarine-style small fission reactors (the Russians are already producing mainland electricity using a submarine-fission reactor apparently) then the same principles could be applied to hybrid fission-fusion reactors. Whereas something like the size of ITER is highly likely to go out of control if the critical mass is ever achieved we will just, back to square one, have a massive nuclear H-bomb detonation. And to make matters worse ITER is sited in an earthquake region like those in the US. Remember Three-Mile Island and all the nuclear reactors sited on the San-Andreas Faultlines? Interesting to see what happens to LA when they all go into melt-down in the next major earthquake! :)
