Neutrons from Muon-Catalyzed Fusion and Muon-Capture Processes in an Ultradense Hydrogen H(0) Generator

    Neutrons from Muon-Catalyzed Fusion and Muon-Capture Processes in an Ultradense Hydrogen H(0) Generator

    Abstract

    A generator for ultradense hydrogen H(0) also generates kaons, pions, and muons both spontaneously and after laser-pulse induction. The negative muons formed can be used to generate the well-studied muon-catalyzed nuclear fusion D + D process in deuterium gas D2. Both laser-induced and spontaneous neutron emissions are now observed from the generator by commercial neutron detectors. Thermalization with polyethylene plastic blocks is used for the 6Li thermal neutron detectors (Kromek TN15 and Saint Gobain BC-702), which increases the signal rate; the background in the laboratory increases by a factor of 3. A laser-induced neutron signal is observed with D2 gas at pressure <1 bar. It is attributed to muon-catalyzed fusion by slow muons in the D2 gas at high D2 pressure. The size of the neutron signal is limited by the relatively inefficient moderation of the muons before their decay in the low D2 gas pressure used. With ordinary hydrogen H2 or p2 (protium), no fusion but only a low signal possibly from capture-generated neutrons is observed. This neutron signal in p2 gas is often temporarily depressed by the laser probably due to changes in the p(0) material. The spontaneous signal using p2 in the generator can be due to neutron-ejecting capture processes caused by muons formed spontaneously in the generator, while the spontaneous signal with D2 may be due to muon-catalyzed fusion as well as capture processes.

  • Unfortunately it looks like the link I was given prior to posting this thread was too fresh and that the paper wasn't meant to be freely available. While nowadays there are known alternative ways for downloading paywalled research papers, I actually managed to get a copy from the official link before access permissions got changed.


    In the paper there's interestingly a reference to the Swedish patent that was discussed in another thread here on LENR-Forum.



  • The calculated D+D muon-catalyzed fusion rate inside the apparatus is very low and is probably intended to be regarded as a "proof of concept". I guess one should be mostly interested (or concerned) about the 1015 particles / second (kaons and muons) that get emitted outside of it.



    Given that:




    Other highlights from what I understood:

    • The meson and muon generation capability is similar between p(0) and D(0). However only D2 gas can give muon-catalyzed D+D fusion.
    • This production can also occur spontaneously (without a laser), resembling the reactions called LENR.
    • A higher pressure in the chamber gives a larger amount of muon-catalyzed D+D fusion within a short distance the generator, due to quenching of the high energy particles by the gaseous molecules.
    • However, only a very limited amount of muon-catalyzed D+D fusion occurs inside the apparatus under the tested conditions. Even at 0.5 bar most of the muons leave the apparatus.
    • Destroying (e.g. with the laser) the H(0) layer formed can affect negatively the spontaneous signal for a period ranging minutes to hours.
    • Parameters like pressure inside the catalysts and their temperature affect the rate of spontaneous meson generation. A higher temperature affects neutral kaon formation, but how exactly it's not been clarified.
