LENR vs Solar/Wind, and emerging Green Technologies.

    I don't mean to downplay or dismiss pandemic related problems in the wind turbine business.


    Many restaurants and some cruise ship companies may never recover. Major U.S. retailers such as Lord & Taylor's have gone out of business. Retailers and shopping malls were in trouble before the pandemic. Apparently it pushed them over the edge. It sped-up other changes that were happening gradually, such as increased telecommuting and business meetings held by Zoom instead of flying to cities. The airlines' income from business meeting travel may never fully recover.

    A newly developed battery based on aluminium, nitrogen and a specialised ionic liquid electrolyte can be used for energy storage via a net reaction that produces aluminium nitride by breaking the challenging nitrogen–nitrogen triple bond. Aluminium nitride can be converted to ammonia, opening a new avenue for coupling energy generation and the production of nitrogen-containing compounds, without relying on industrial routes that contribute to global warming.


    Batteries based on gases can simultaneously store and release energy while also converting gaseous components to new compounds. These compounds may act as precursors to industrially relevant chemicals. For example, Li-CO2 batteries work by exploiting the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to form a lithium carbonate. This carbonate can react further to create a range of different chemicals.

    It will be interesting to see if things change back after a vaccine ends this pandemic. I predict things will be relaxed but not back the way they were. To some extent we should remain vigilant, because experts say other zoonotic diseases are likely.


    As for bullshit forms, I read an account by a British person who flew from New York to London a few months ago. On the airplane they made her fill in many forms, asking many questions. She got to Heathrow, went through customs, went through quarantine. Nowhere did anyone ask her for the forms. As I recall she asked someone, "where should I hand in these forms?" They had no idea. So she went home and threw them away.


    I once got off an airplane from the U.S. to Rome, Italy. As in any airport, there was only one hallway out. I walked down a hallway, another hallway, another . . . and out into the parking lot. No one asked for the passport or anything. So I went back in to get my luggage. It was missing. I lined up and finally reached missing baggage counter. A friendly, middle aged lady there spoke excellent English. I said, "my bag did not show up." She said, in an affable way, "that's been happening a lot today." As if we were talking about the weather. The bag showed up three days later, which is normal for Italy, or Spain, in my experience.


    When travelling to Europe, I recommend you bring everything in carry-luggage.

    That is pretty typical of regional airports in Italy. In some of them you are even allowed not to smoke. As for luggage, I only ever take a carry-on. Life's too short to hang around the carousel.

    I will say, the staff there is friendly, and you can find your way around. The worst airport I have been to is Charles de Gaulle in Paris. I arrived there in the middle of the night. I had no idea where the next flight would be. There was a gigantic board with all of the flights listed in no apparent order. Not flight number, not the name of the place they were going to, not the time . . . It was like a memory core dump from a failed program circa 1975. There was not a soul around to ask where to go. Another time I was stuck in line for nearly an hour with one person checking people in a desultory manner. I barely made the flight.


    The personality of that airport reminds of Charles de Gaulle himself. It is well named. Like Prauge's Franz Kafka International Airport:

    The challenge isn't some heat, but enough heat and the means of its conversion to more electricity that what is required for apparatus. I have shown by mass balance and stoichiometry that Hydrogen and Oxygen can be combined via an electric current in a series of elementary steps to Silicon which then fissions to nitrogen. There no reason to expect that BLP's water contaminated liquid metal experiments do any other reaction that the one I have proven above. The elements that occur in the elementary step above are also the transmutation products observed by the Safire project. So again, its a version of the same reaction. However, as I have shown by energy balance, these reactions are doing something with mass difference between the reactants and products that is not conversion of the mass difference to energy. Hence, LENRs primary problem is that it doesn't produce a nuclear ash or high energy products which would be consistent with a thermonuclear reaction. This is why people who only skim the surface of these LENR projects claim LENR is nonsense.


    Progress in LENR now rest mostly what the metal (BLP) or plasma layers about the reaction (Safire) are doing to convert an unknown strange radiation (the main LENR energy product) to heat. There may also be hope of production of muons from LENR followed by muon fusion. It also wouldn't surprise me if starting with Osama gas or its various versions leads to electricity over unity sooner than other approaches.

    The biggest weakness or failure of Planet of the Humans is the following fact:


    When technologies go through fast and exponential changes you CANNOT use history to judge the same technology.

    Like concluding on Wind power or Solar power using examples from 2005 og 2012 like in the movie.


    Nuclear France will now expand windpower with 30 GigaWatt the next decade. The goal is 33% renewables in the mix by 2030. A dramatic increase from today.

    Exactly. Or like railroads in the 1860 to 1890. Or microcomputers in the early 1980s. In addition to "fast and exponential growth" you need a large and continuous reduction in cost. It does not have to be exponential. As long as it is substantial, year after year, it can be roughly the same percentage. I think the cost of railroad transportation fell at a stable rate during the boom years of rail construction. Cost reductions have been exponential in some cases, such as with the cost of illumination, computing, and computer storage. See the graphs on p. 11:

    The same is true of societies- look at the social/cultural revolution caused by the pandemic. We might have predicted it was inevitable, who who predicted it would mean the beginning of the end for the daily commute to the office? One of my friends in Tokyo is being paid by his employer to organise a live VR version of their factory to reduce the need for contact on the production floor. And they are prepared to throw millions at the project despite being told it may not be possible or practical, but they are confident that if it can be made to work effectively they will get their money back by licensing it to others.

    Possible energy breakthrough.

    A Great Story for sure.
