  • Michigan State University (MSU) students share a passion for both solving the climate crisis and mitigating wildfires with Anthropocene.
    For their Capstone Project, a group of talented computer science students sponsored by Anthropocene Institute, created WRiFT (Wildfire Risks Forecasting Tool) over the course of a semester. Their sophisticated simulation and forecasting tool can be used by anyone, anywhere to determine how wildfire might affect their local community and to determine how to protect their families, homes, and neighbors.
    For their hard work and resourcefulness, the team won the Amazon Sigma Award, the top prize among 30 teams that took part in the Spring 2022 Capstone program at MSU.

    MSU was our main local rival in Collegiate Ultimate. A very competitive mindset can be found there. Last week I encountered a former Michigan Decathlete at the Venice Beach Basketball courts. Another example of the passion fostered at the University which improves life on our small planet.

  • The ‘‘Green Nobel’’ is a nod to grassroots environmentalism and a gateway to greatness. The 2022 Goldman Environmental Prize will be awarded May 25, reports The Examiner’s Jessica Wolfrom.   • 1 Million Tonnes of H2 a Year - So Long as the Wind Blows.



    Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have announced today (May 20) a proposal to build a dedicated artificial island in the North Sea, for large-scale green hydrogen production, called ‘Brintø’.


    Brintø, Danish for ‘Hydrogen Island’, would provide a significant contribution towards Denmark’s ambitious hydrogen strategy, with its ability to supply up to 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year once at full capacity of 10GW.


    CIP have suggested that Brintø could be operational by 2030, and could prove to be a vital step in securing green energy supply for Europe.


    The hydrogen produced via Power-to-X will use offshore wind electricity and will be hoped to be exported to countries such as, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium using pipelines.


    Thomas Dalsgaard, Partner at CIP, said, “The Danish, German, Dutch, and Belgian ambitions for the North Sea show the rest of the world how the green transition can be turbocharged if you dare to think big, internationally and in integrated systems.


    “Green energy will be harvested on a large scale out at sea, tied together by energy islands, converted into green hydrogen, and transported across borders via offshore hydrogen infrastructure."


    “The opportunities are significant, and the Danish BrintØ is the first step in that direction.”

  • California has spent the past two years ramping up its efforts to protect the grid from threats of extreme heat, drought and wildfires. This has involved ordering the deployment of gigawatts’ worth of solar and batteries, paying utility customers to reduce energy use during grid emergencies, and — for when all else fails — lining up fossil-fueled generators to fill any gaps.


    Now California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has proposed $6.7 billion in additional spending over the coming years to shore up grid reliability. Some of that spending — nearly a billion dollars — would be aimed at expanding carbon-free energy. But much more of it — about $5.2 billion — would likely end up going to gas power plants and diesel backup generators the state hopes it won’t have to use.


    Already this year, record-breaking heat waves, drought and fires in the West have scrambled utility and grid operators’ grid-reliability forecasts. Last week, the North American Electric Reliability Corp., an industry-led grid-monitoring group, warned of elevated risk of summer grid outages from the Upper Midwest and Texas to California and the Pacific Northwest.

    “We’re really trying to estimate collectively at state agencies the worst of the worst, the extreme of the extreme, and to prepare for that,” Siva Gunda, vice chair at the California Energy Commission, said at a Friday workshop focused on California’s summer grid challenges. “The governor’s budget gives us much-needed tools to expand this fight against climate change” — starting with lessening the risk of blackouts or other grid emergencies spurred by extreme weather events.

    The Swedish Energy Agency has granted support to two innovative projects that may have an impact on future energy systems, both nationally and internationally. Swedish Modular Reactors AB has been granted just over SEK 99 million in support of demonstrating a smaller lead-cooled reactor. Solkompaniet Sverige AB has been granted SEK 14.4 million in support of demonstrating a smart solar park.

    Both initiatives support innovative solutions, which by demonstrating and evaluating them increase the possibility that they can be scaled up and disseminated to speed up energy conversion.

    In the last two years, we have seen how electrification has taken off in earnest. Now we also see an increased interest in investments in fossil-free electricity production that may be necessary for our national transition, but also an opportunity to export solutions to meet the global climate challenge, says Rémy Kolessar, head of the Swedish Energy Agency's research, innovation and business development department.

    Lead-cooled reactors

    In the Solstice project, an electrically heated pilot plant at scale 1:56 of SEALER, a small modular reactor cooled with lead, will be tested and demonstrated in Oskarshamn. The technology can eventually be developed into a cost-effective fossil-free base power and thus contribute to facilitating electrification for a transition to a fossil-free society, not least on a global level. Because the solution can also produce hydrogen with high efficiency, which is stored at times when the electricity demand is greater than the electricity production, it enables increased flexibility and stability in the electricity system. The project is a collaboration between Swedish Modular Reactors, Blykalla Reaktorer Stockholm AB, Sydkraft Nuclear Power AB / Uniper and researchers from KTH.

    Smart solar parks

    Through controllable inverters, batteries and ultracapacitors connected to innovative AI-powered control systems, Solkompaniet, together with Krafthem AB and Solgrid AS, creates a smart solar park. The components are available today but they have not been configured, tested and demonstrated in a solar park on a larger scale before. If the demonstration is successful, it can enable an increased amount of sun in both Sweden and other parts of the world. In the project, Solkompaniet and Krafthem will develop a ready-made concept for a smart solar park, containing both hardware and software. The goal is that this concept in turn can be commercialized and thereby lead to solar parks being able to deliver system services in the electricity system such as rapid and deep (transient) frequency changes and stabilization at longer-term but less deep frequency deviations.

    Power density roughly 10,000 times higher than any chemical fuel has been recorded. However, these experiments were not well documented. The experiment I usually point to is Roulette, Roulette and Pons.

    Do the numbers, and you will see that Experiment 3 produced 294 MJ from 3.6 g of palladium. 3.6 g of the best chemical fuel (gasoline) produces 155 kJ, which is 1,897 times less. You should do the numbers, because I tend to get the numbers wrong, so you should check my arithmetic. 1,897 times more energy than chemical fuel is impressive! It cannot be a chemical reaction. It is not the highest number on record, but the power levels, power density and temperatures of this experiment were high enough for practical uses, so I often point to these results. In the script, I compared power density to a fission reactor fuel pellet.

    It was obvious from the very first paper that cold fusion cannot be chemical. F&P wrote: "It is inconceivable that this could be due to anything but nuclear processes.” They were right!

  • Well to give some adds to my previous comments i should say:

    A few decades back i worked as maintenance engineer for french nuclear power plants.

    I had been told how French technology was the best in the world, with all best choices too.

    Finally pure "French"spirit, foreigners will understand ahahaha.

    Today we continue stupidly on this pressurized cooling water way, pushed this time by French lobbies.

    Newspapers report every day problems about welding cracks, of course in an amplified way of several orders...

    These welding problems, also difficulties to find enough qualified welders make increase the price of this technological way in a considerable rate.

    Today, behind walls, former heads from the French state energy company, concede clearly that this way is bullshit, too expensive, too complicated.

    Carl Page, the wise eye is not mistaken in advertising molten salt reactors in California, these operating at ambient pressure, so no need for huge welds to confine the pressure of a primary circuit as for French nuclear power plant, 155 bars and 350°C.

    Also, this Swedish "prototype" plant makes me laugh as much as Tarasenko's marbles. We already had an operational molten salt plant in France more than 20 years ago, not a prototype, this way...

    Unfortunately, the demagogic gangrene of environmentalists and policies submitted in the same vein as Merkel have closed it.

    Ahhh, if we had a good but "wise" dictator in France, or a guy who don't come from the usual seraglio like a Trump.. That would be cool.

    In the spring of 1991, Dr. Randell Mills et al. reported significant excess heat from ordinary water cells with nickel electrodes, an energy which they deemed to be coming not from nuclear reactions, but from a new form of catalyzed shrinkage reaction via a drastically remodeled form of the hydrogen atom and a re-write of quantum mechanics, which is now called by Mills "Classical Quantum Mechanics" (CQM) [Now called "GUTCP" for Grand Unified Theory of Classical Physics].

    CF/LENR scientists, themselves outcasts from the Establishment, strangely enough have not paid much attention to Mills' experimental work. This is most unfortunate, because it is compendious and strongly supportive of excess heat but also of non-standard, highly anomalous, spectral anomalies from hydrogen systems.


    This stance can be explained because of the very strong resistance by CF/LENR theorists to exploring foundational flaws in Standard Quantum Mechanics (SQM). Mills' CQM [GUTCP] work could shed considerable light on the problem of CF/LENR- these are results that cannot and should not be logically separated from efforts to understand CF/LENR results proper.

    But Mills, while accepting that his "shrunken" (sub-ground state) hydrogen atoms ("hydrinos") may well cause nuclear reactions due to their more charge-neutral presentation to other nuclei, does not believe that the excess heat being reported in CF/LENR experiments is of nuclear origin- i.e. the direct result of nuclear reactions

    Mills' CQM theory ... does have two characteristics that recommend it:


    A. It seems to have very significant predictive power to suggest what hydrogen systems are likely to evolve excess heat, and which ones may not (more such predictive ability than most CF/LENR concepts), and


    B. CQM is not beholden to the "mainstream cold fusion hypothesis" (MCFH)- i.e. at least it allows the possibility that many instances of excess heat are not of nuclear origin per se.

    Mills et al. at BlackLight Power Corp. in Cranbury, New Jersey have mounted what is one of the most direct threats ever to the entire foundation of Quantum Mechanics, because the compendious experimental data sets- if valid- prima facie cannot be explained by Standard Quantum Mechanics (SQM). There is convincing excess energy data of large magnitude and there are spectral emission lines that do not correspond to previously recognized atomic structure.
