Just trying to make sense out of it - the SDP (Super Deep Penetration) phenomena might also be accounted for by piezoelectric sand crystals fracturing as they bombarded armour-plated tank iron plates releasing neutrons which subsequently cause transmutations. To what extent SDP sand penetration mechanisms can be compared to ultrasonic cleaning remains to be seen.

There may be more than one mechanism - for almost everything.

My suspicion is that if transmutation occurred, it was induced by cavitation shock impacts on the material. The foil is 0.33 mm thick, with half-wave phonon resonance through the sheet of ~7.3 MHz. That is sufficiently above the ultrasonic stimulus that direct mechanical effects are not likely. The ~1.5% cleaning additive contained Sodium, Sulfur and Nitrogen, but no Calcium or Silicon. Those elements could have been from a contaminant inclusion in the foil, so their detection is not proof of transmutation and further study is needed.

THHuxleynew, have you read the extensive work of the Italian group led by Dr. Fabio Cardone? They have been doing experiments with ultrasonic cavitation since 2000, published a respectable number of peer reviewed papers, and one theoretical book published by Springer.
I attach here the first paper of a series of three that deal with cavitation induced transmutation in mercury, and the link for the issue of the IJCMNS where the third paper of the series was published. The second is not available with open access but it was shared by Dr. Cardone with me.
I think the papers are self explanatory but the possibility that the significant transmutation reported in this case was contamination is specifically ruled out methodologically and analytically.

This is what happens when Hg is exposed to neutrons - work from 1941, the level of transmutations is very, very low (ppb) but its interesting that Cardone et al obtain less Au than Pt suggesting alpha particle ejection (which is in itself a fusion reaction) in preference to proton ejection. The likely mechanism how ultrasound stimulates nuclear effects has been suggested by A Widom et al,

We have employed the standard model of weak interactions along with the known theory of piezoelectric materials to explain the experimental evidence that fracturing piezoelectric rocks produces neutrons. We have also explained why such fracturing processes produce microwave radiation. Dr Richard , well, Cardone’s et al DST is not a whim, they have been able to steer their experiments using their DST theory, so at least some part of it might be on the right track. They have reported some of the transmutation products from mercury in the range of grams per kilogram (Br and Ti) so DST is not a bad approximate as far as they can tell. They control the Ultrasound energy exposure according to 4 thresholds that need to be met in order to have a strong effect. Failure to meet those thresholds (which is the control experiment) results also in transmutations, but in a completely less unambiguous form.

This is very interesting and has far deeper implications. The SAFIRE project was intended to test the so called “electric sun” model as proposed by a minority group of researchers building upon the ideas of Alfvén and Juergens that what powers stars and galaxies is not gravity but electromagnetism, an idea more broadly called plasma cosmology and popularized as “the electric universe”. This project has validated many of the postulates of the Electric Universe proponents. The Electric Universe more vocal scientists are Dr Wallace Thornhill and Dr. David Tallbot.
The people that executed the SAFIRE project (Aurtas Ltd., which is an engineering consultant company) were hired as independent consultants to test the electric sun model. The transmutation and excess energy found were not expected by the team, but Wallace Thornhill recently made a two part presentation about the results in their YouTube channel, and in the second part of it you can see clearly they had been aware of transmutations and excess heat would be eventually found, since the 1980s.

Yes, however this pdf is missing much more information on the transmutations they found and the video presentation posted by Ed Storms, which was led by Montgomery Childs, which is 12 minutes short of an hour long, and goes into much further detail about the transmutations found. They found all these results around 2016, but they were so stunned that went to great lengths to prove to themselves they were not wrong before telling to the rest of the world.

Collis in his introductory, made a complimentary note of how many Russians were there. It may have been a record turnout for them at an ICCF? Good to see them get more involved with their western/eastern counterparts. Lots of good LENR research going on over there, and it needs to be better reported on.
