  • Study: Respiratory failure in COVID-19 usually not driven by cytokine storm

    A new study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., however, suggests that an out-of-control immune response is not the main problem for the vast majority of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Only 4% of patients in the study had the sky-high levels of immune molecules that signify a so-called "cytokine storm." The rest had inflammation, but not a remarkably high amount for people fighting infection. If anything, the COVID-19 patients had less inflammation than a comparable group of influenza patients.

  • This might be the coronavirus breakthrough the world has been waiting for

    started in late September when a couple of studies described a key interferon-related phenomenon that can increase the risk of death in COVID-19 patients, including younger men. Genetic issues impacting interferon that go undetected until a COVID-19 diagnosis could worsen the prognosis. Those studies indicated that looking for hidden interferon imbalances would allow doctors to determine which COVID-19 patients are at risk of developing severe complications.

    A case study published in The Lancet revealed a 25-year-old man in Washoe County, Nevada, suffered two episodes of COVID-19, one in April and the second at the beginning of June. Genetic testing showed the viruses that caused his two bouts with COVID-19 were different, so it was not a case of one prolonged illness. In fact, the second time around he had a worse outcome from the disease.

  • Pandemic puzzle solved as scientists decode why Covid-19 largely spares children

    Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center figured out that children have lower levels of a receptor protein that SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes Covid-19 – needs to invade the lungs.

    Researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison infected 16 hamsters with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Eight hamsters were infected with the new 614G strain. Eight others were infected with the original strain that was first identified in China. Each infected hamster was paired with a healthy hamster that was separated by a partition in a cage, so that the animals couldn’t touch but did breathe the same air. By the second day of the experiment, five of the eight healthy hamsters sharing air with animals infected with the 614G strain had fallen ill and were shedding the virus themselves, but none of the healthy hamsters paired with those infected with the original strain had gotten sick. The original strain did eventually sicken the healthy animals, but it took 2 more days for that to happen, proving that the changes helped to speed the spread of the virus

  • Vitamin D and Covid-19, the good, the bad and the ugly. Its all here, decide for yourselves

    The argument for supplementation

    Vitamin D reduces the risk of other acute respiratory infections. One interesting finding of this meta-analysis is that people who were very deficient (less than 25 nmol/L) saw the largest protective effect with an adjusted odd ratio of 0.58 and a 95% CI of 0.40 to 0.82. These are the same populations which seem to be at risk for severe Covid-19

    Calcitriol, the active form of Vitamin D is active against the SARS-COV2 virus

    Patients treated with calcifediol are less likely to be admitted to the ICU than controls

    Several studies have now observed lower vitamin D levels among severe Covid-19 patients

    Vitamin D is very low risk an adverse events of vitamin D supplementation can be easily managed by clinicians

    Until the 21st century, vitamin D was primarily recognized for its role in regulating calcium and

    bone health and preventing rickets [1]. In the last 20 years, however, research has shown that vitamin

    D also profoundly influences immune cells and generally lowers inflammation [2,3]. Vitamin D is

    a powerful epigenetic regulator, influencing more than 2500 genes [4] and impacting dozens of our

    most serious health challenges, including cancer [5,6], diabetes mellitus [7], acute respiratory tract

    infections [8], and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis [9].

    According to the Worldometer website [10], the world had recorded 40,628,492 cases and

    1,122,733 deaths from COVID-19 by 19 October 2020.

    There are a number of findings regarding COVID-19 that may be related to vitamin D status.

    ANTIVIRALS, DRUGS, AND NUTRIENTS WITH IMMUNOMODULATORY ACTIVITY

    IN PATIENTS WITH CORONAVIRUS-SARS2-INDUCED DISEASE OF DIFFERENT

    SEVERITY

    ABSTRACT

    In December 2019, a novel human-infecting coronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2, has been

    recognized to cause a pneumonia epidemic outbreak with different degree of severity in Wuhan,

    Hubei Province in China. Since then this epidemic spread worldwide in Europe, and Italy also have

    been involved. Effective preventive and therapeutic strategies are absolutely required to block this

    serious public health concern. Unfortunately, few studies about SARS-CoV-2 concerning its

    immunopathogenesis and treatment are available.

    On the basis of the assumption that the SARS-CoV-2 is genetically related to SARS-CoV (about

    82% of genome homology) and that its characteristics, like the modality of transmission or the type

    of the immune response it may stimulate, are still poor-known, a literature search was performed to

    identify the reports assessing these elements in patients with SARS-CoV-induced infection.

    Therefore, we have analyzed:

    1) the structure of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV;

    2) the clinical signs and symptoms and pathogenic mechanisms observed during the development of

    acute respiratory syndrome and the Cytokine Release Syndrome;

    3) the modification of the cell microRNome and of the immune response in patients with SARS

    infection;

    4) the possible role of some liposoluble compounds (such as vitamin A, D and E) in modulating

    directly or indirectly the replication ability of SARS-CoV-2 and host immune response.

    Das Coronavirus hat Italien schon viel früher erreicht als bisher angenommen. Gemäß einer Studie des Instituts für Tumorerkrankungen in Mailand und der Universität Siena, deren Ergebnis am Sonntag in der Fachzeitschrift „Tumori Journal“ veröffentlicht wurde, kursierte Sars-CoV-2 schon im September 2019 vor allem im Norden des Landes. Der erste positive Test auf eine Covid-19-Erkrankung war erst Mitte Februar 2020 bei einem Kranken mit atypischer beidseitiger Lungenentzündung in Codogno in der Lombardei festgestellt worden.

    Virus entered Italy already before October 2019. This will reverse some Chinese claims and may be people will start to ask what CDC already did know early 2019 when it lifted corona to supervisory level!

    Milan was an early entry point - but the story is somewhat muddied by the fact that the textile and pasta businesses there employ 21,000 Chinese people, the oldest and largest community in Italy.

  • Our immune systems can cope with Covid-19 – it's our politicians who can't

    In reality, it is our inadequate policies and lack of evidence-based public health strategy that has gotten us to where we are today in the US, the UK and most of the rest of Europe. Our immune systems are mostly responding to this virus the way we’d expect; it is our leadership whose responses have failed.

    An arthritis drug may cut deaths in hospitalized COVID-19 patients by about two thirds among those suffering from moderate or severe cases of the virus, according to a new study.

    Called baricitinib, and marketed under the brand name Olumiant, the medication has been touted by its British company as a possible game changer in the fight against COVID-19, the Daily Mail reported.

    The protein complex, called SKI complex, is a group of human proteins that regulates various aspects of the normal functioning of a cell. In the new study, the researchers discovered that this complex also plays a crucial role in helping a virus replicate its genetic material, called RNA, within the cells it infects.

    More men get sick and die from COVID-19 than women do and researchers at the University of Miami may have found part of the reason why.

    According to a newly released study, COVID-19 invades some men’s testicles.

    Researchers at the university tested the testicles of men who died from COVID-19 and found the virus inside the reproductive organs.
