They made a lot of mistakes in Japan, but overall their per capita and absolute number of cases and deaths are far lower than any EU country, and 50 times lower than the U.S. So they are way less idiotic than we are. Lowest deaths in Europe per million: Finland (60), Norway (71). Japan: 16. U.S.: 816. Switzerland: 527.
I do not see anything idiotic about sick people going to hospitals. They do not stay in the hospital in Japan for light cases. They are sent home to quarantine. Or, if their house is not safe for that, they are given a place in a reserved hotel or some other facility.

The suicide rate in Japan has always been on the high end compared to most most countries, for cultural and historic reasons. Although the rate is much lower in Japan than Russia and Korea, and a little lower for males than Belgium, the U.S. and Sweden. COVID has increased it somewhat, but I doubt more than other countries. There is much better unemployment compensation in Japan than in most countries.
There have been more public health measures to reduce suicide in Japan in recent years, which I think has reduced the rate. This has been in the news. Since 2000 it has fallen from around 22 per 100,000 down to 15.
