    No decline in COVID infections in first days of latest lockdown, major study shows

    Coronavirus infections did not slow down and may have increased instead in the first days of the latest national lockdown, a major ongoing study has found.


    Researchers also said it will be weeks before the vaccine rollout has a substantial effect.


    The study from REACT-1 at Imperial College in London said: "During the initial 10 days of the third COVID-19 lockdown… prevalence of COVID-19 was very high with no evidence of decline."

    An expert has warned that research suggests the current national lockdown in England is not working.


    Steven Riley, professor of infectious disease dynamics at Imperial College London, said the interim findings of the college’s React study show that the prevalence of infection increased between January 6 and 15.



    Speaking to Times Radio, he said: “It’s long enough that, were the lockdown working effectively, we would certainly have hoped to have seen a decline.”


    He said data from previous lockdowns did show a decline, adding that current research “certainly doesn’t support the conclusion that lockdown is working”.

    Results A total of 129 patients were enrolled (mean age 57 (SD 14) years; 68% men) and all completed follow-up. All patients in the tocilizumab group and two in the standard care group received tocilizumab. 18 of 65 (28%) patients in the tocilizumab group and 13 of 64 (20%) in the standard care group were receiving mechanical ventilation or died at day 15 (odds ratio 1.54, 95% confidence interval 0.66 to 3.66; P=0.32). Death at 15 days occurred in 11 (17%) patients in the tocilizumab group compared with 2 (3%) in the standard care group (odds ratio 6.42, 95% confidence interval 1.59 to 43.2). Adverse events were reported in 29 of 67 (43%) patients who received tocilizumab and 21 of 62 (34%) who did not receive tocilizumab.


    Conclusions In patients with severe or critical covid-19, tocilizumab plus standard care was not superior to standard care alone in improving clinical outcomes at 15 days, and it might increase mortality.

    UK scientists to update COVID-19 vaccine to resist new variants

    LONDON: The team behind the UK’s main COVID-19 vaccine, developed at Oxford University, is preparing to update the inoculation to be resistant to new strains of the virus.


    British newspaper The Independent reported that the team is mobilizing this new effort in response to the variants seen in the UK, South Africa and elsewhere.


    The efficacy of the current vaccine against the most common strains of COVID-19 is being assessed by scientists from the university, with preliminary results expected toward mid-February.


    Prof. Sarah Gilbert, the team’s lead, said the researchers would not wait to discover the test’s results before acting, and instead are already synthesizing the new variants into the jab that is currently being rolled out nationwide.

    The devastating fall and winter wave of coronavirus infections that is causing so much misery across the U.S. appears to have finally peaked, according to several researchers who are closely tracking the virus.

It is not the main variant that circulates in the UK, but another big variant of the UK that seems to have been introduced in KZN and this variant also has one important mutation," he says.


    He further stated that this news will be shared with the public soon and urged South Africans not to panic.

    This is in the UK. I have three comments:

    1. You would not expect a slow down in the first days. It takes a week or two.
    2. The new strain of COVID-19 is spreading, so you would expect a sharp increase. This increase may have been decreased (to put it in a confusing way). The increase might have been sharper if they had not locked down more.
    3. The number of infections in the UK has declined significantly in recent weeks, from ~60,000 down to ~42,000. See: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/ Deaths have not declined, but they should follow.

    As I expected, the Trump administration had essentially no plans to roll out the vaccine. They had no other plans to deal with COVID-19, so this is not surprising. They ditched all earlier plans last April, leaving it up to the states to deal with the pandemic. See:
