There were other testing requirements, instituted in 1938.

Penicillin was adapted quickly because there was a war on, and also because the effect of it was so dramatic and obvious. Other drugs in recent decades have been adapted as quickly. Double blind tests were begun, but they were quickly stopped when it became apparent these drugs had a large effect. There have also been some tests abandoned when it became clear the drugs had no effect, or caused problems.

At the beginning of April, about two months after the WHO announced that the COVID-19 outbreak was a global health emergency on January 30, 2020, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide hit one million. Many countries had still not fully realized the magnitude of the pandemic, even though the WHO declared it as the first coronavirus to reach pandemic level less than a month earlier.

And two months later, the number of worldwide cases had passed 10 million, with over 500,000 deaths by the end of June.

Moderna said Monday it's accelerating work on a Covid-19 booster shot to guard against the recently discovered variant in South Africa.

The company's researchers said its current coronavirus vaccine appears to work against the two highly transmissible strains found in the U.K. and South Africa, although it looks like it may be less effective against the latter.
