New research suggests an over-the-counter nasal spray is effective at significantly reducing and nearly eliminating SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 after a single dose.
An in vitro study conducted by scientists from Northwestern University and Utah State University concluded that components found within the Xlear nasal spray, particularly grapefruit seed extract and xylitol, were successful in statistically reducing the amount of SARS-CoV-2.
After a single blast, the researchers saw the nasal spray reduced virus from 4.2 to 1.7 log10 CCID50 per 0.1 mL, a statistically significant reduction of 2.5 log10 CCID50.” News of the study was announced by Xlear and the company said this is only the latest research that reaches a conclusion the over-the-counter spray is effective against the virus that causes COVID-19.
Xlear is currently sold as a nasal irrigant for cleansing and moisturizing the nasal cavities.

The number of patients at Primary Children's Hospital diagnosed with a coronavirus-related complication has doubled from the past two months.
In fact, there are now over 1,500 confirmed cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, otherwise known as MIS-C. The syndrome develops after the child has been infected by SARS-CoV-2.
As medical experts try to unravel the long-term effects of COVID-19, Primary Children's Hospital officials announced Tuesday that they will begin the first-term study of MIS-C.
The Long-Term Outcomes after the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome In Children, referred to as the MUSIC Study, will seek to answer how MIS-C affects children who were diagnosed five years after they developed it.
The massive project will include work from over 30 children's hospitals across the U.S. and Canada. It's funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, said Dr. Ngan Truong, a pediatric cardiologist for University of Utah Health and Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital, and the study's co-leader.
This should include long haulers as symptoms and outcomes are very similar!

Even in absolute numbers, infections are not going down and the number of active cases has risen in recent days from below 70,000 earlier this week to 76,708 on Wednesday.
Another persistent figure that hasn’t dropped for many days is serious cases, which have been hovering around the 1,200 mark and stood at 1,141 on Wednesday, putting immense strain on hospitals, many of which have converted various wards into COVID-19 wards and some of which have said they cannot handle more patients at this time.
Lockdowns not working, masks not working and lots of vaccine questions. Answers are needed ASAP as the next deadly wave will begin around the 1st of March. I'll get into that later.

There are few differences from the spring, when Britons suffered a devastating first wave and were put under a draconian lockdown. They are now asking themselves how they got here. Yet again.
When asked that very thing, Johnson has repeatedly pointed to a new and more contagious variant of the virus, now infamously known around the world as the "UK variant." Health Secretary Matt Hancock too has claimed the country's response was working until the new variant hit.
But it's not that simple. Like in the first wave, the government has been slow to respond to rising case and death numbers with restrictions. It has failed to get an adequate contact-tracing and isolation system running. And it has, again, been slow on border controls, only closing "travel corridors" with more than 60 countries or territories in mid-January amid record-breaking daily death tolls.
Experts say the government hasn't learned from its past mistakes and still lacks a coherent strategy.
Prof. Anne Johnson, president of the UK's Academy of Medical Sciences, said there was a clear correlation with the relaxation of restrictions before Christmas and the recent spike in infections.
"The new variant is important and more transmissible, but that's not the only cause of the third wave. Let's be clear," she told CNN.

I do not think so. It would only be bad news if many people who were vaccinated weeks ago are becoming sick now. That is, if the vaccinations are not working. If it can be shown that all of the people now being infected have not yet been vaccinated then there is no problem with the vaccine. In that case, the problem is with people and their behavior, or perhaps the problem is a more infectious form of the virus.

That emphasis all but slipped away amid an all-consuming focus on the coronavirus. In fact, experts warn, the changes in hygiene and other practices caused by the Covid-19 fight are likely to have contributed to the spread of these drug-resistant germs..erms..
