  • Over-the-Counter Nasal Spray Could Be Effective Against COVID-19

    https://www.biospace.com/artic…e-against-covid-19-virus/

New research suggests an over-the-counter nasal spray is effective at significantly reducing and nearly eliminating SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 after a single dose.

An in vitro study conducted by scientists from Northwestern University and Utah State University concluded that components found within the Xlear nasal spray, particularly grapefruit seed extract and xylitol, were successful in statistically reducing the amount of SARS-CoV-2.

After a single blast, the researchers saw the nasal spray reduced virus from 4.2 to 1.7 log10 CCID50 per 0.1 mL, a statistically significant reduction of 2.5 log10 CCID50.” News of the study was announced by Xlear and the company said this is only the latest research that reaches a conclusion the over-the-counter spray is effective against the virus that causes COVID-19.

Xlear is currently sold as a nasal irrigant for cleansing and moisturizing the nasal cavities.

  • Why N95 Masks Are Still In Short Supply In The U.S.

    https://www.npr.org/sections/h…n-short-supply-in-the-u-s

The Biden administration has invoked the Defense Production Act to prioritize production of N95s and other medical supplies. But even with those measures, U.S. hospitals remain worried about their supply of these medical masks — more formally called respirators — despite efforts by factories to churn out billions more.

The story of N95 production over the last year in many ways reflects shortages seen throughout the U.S. medical supply during the pandemic — from ventilators and exam gloves to syringes and vaccines. The demand is global and sustained, putting pressure on a fragile supply chain that remains stressed and unable to keep up.

One expert claims that we could end pandemic in 21 days with N95 mask protection

  • How long do MIS-C symptoms last? New Primary Children's Hospital study seeks to find answers

    https://www.ksl.com/article/50…udy-seeks-to-find-answers

The number of patients at Primary Children's Hospital diagnosed with a coronavirus-related complication has doubled from the past two months.

In fact, there are now over 1,500 confirmed cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, otherwise known as MIS-C. The syndrome develops after the child has been infected by SARS-CoV-2.

As medical experts try to unravel the long-term effects of COVID-19, Primary Children's Hospital officials announced Tuesday that they will begin the first-term study of MIS-C.

The Long-Term Outcomes after the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome In Children, referred to as the MUSIC Study, will seek to answer how MIS-C affects children who were diagnosed five years after they developed it.

The massive project will include work from over 30 children's hospitals across the U.S. and Canada. It's funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, said Dr. Ngan Truong, a pediatric cardiologist for University of Utah Health and Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital, and the study's co-leader.

This should include long haulers as symptoms and outcomes are very similar!

  • I want to highlight a couple of headlines, one from the New York times and one from the times of israel.

One day apart, who should I believe. Very confusing. As I have said from the beginning of the pandemic. Confusion rules!!

Israel passes 4,500 COVID deaths as officials said stumped by high case count

    https://news.google.com/articl…=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

Israel passed 4,500 COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, with health officials quoted saying they’re stumped by the dire infection rates after more than two weeks of a nationwide lockdown.

The national death toll stood at 4,501, according to the Health Ministry. Monday saw 74 more people die of the disease. More than one-quarter of Israel’s total COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic have been registered this month alone.

70% of the israel population is fully vaccinated, this should be very concerning to all

  • israel should have reached herd immunity between previous infection and vaccination. So what's going on. It would seem very bad news for vaccine manufactures.

Three weeks into lockdown, rampant mutated strains keep infections sky-high

    https://www.timesofisrael.com/…-infections-sky-high/amp/

Even in absolute numbers, infections are not going down and the number of active cases has risen in recent days from below 70,000 earlier this week to 76,708 on Wednesday.

Another persistent figure that hasn’t dropped for many days is serious cases, which have been hovering around the 1,200 mark and stood at 1,141 on Wednesday, putting immense strain on hospitals, many of which have converted various wards into COVID-19 wards and some of which have said they cannot handle more patients at this time.

Lockdowns not working, masks not working and lots of vaccine questions. Answers are needed ASAP as the next deadly wave will begin around the 1st of March. I'll get into that later.

  • China rolls out anal swab coronavirus tests, saying it’s more accurate than throat method

    https://news.google.com/articl…=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

Months-long lockdowns. Entire city populations herded through the streets for mandatory testing. The people of China could be forgiven for thinking they had seen it all during the coronavirus pandemic.

But now they face a new indignity: the addition of anal swabs — yes, you read that right — to the testing regimen for those in quarantine.

  • UK variant, UCSD researcher warns, looks like a COVID-19 time bomb

    https://news.google.com/articl…=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

An increase in social contact, modeler warns, would be just the thing to cause infection rates to explode as strain achieves dominance

Many are celebrating Monday’s lifting of California’s regional stay-at-home order and the increase in opportunities for outdoor dining, youth sports competition and other social gatherings.

But a group of researchers at UC San Diego, Scripps Research and other respected institutions warned Tuesday that the coming dominance of a new viral variant first spotted in the United Kingdom makes this precisely the wrong moment to take any action that could increase the community’s collective amount of social contact.

Standing before the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, Natasha Martin, a university infectious disease modeler with a doctorate in mathematical biology from Oxford University, noted that B.1.1.7, the variant first spotted in San Diego County on Dec. 30, is estimated to be 50 percent to 70 percent more transmissible than initial versions that swept across the globe after popping up in China.

  • Covid-19 has killed 100,000 people in the UK. Experts say the government is still getting it wrong

    https://news.google.com/articl…=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

There are few differences from the spring, when Britons suffered a devastating first wave and were put under a draconian lockdown. They are now asking themselves how they got here. Yet again.

When asked that very thing, Johnson has repeatedly pointed to a new and more contagious variant of the virus, now infamously known around the world as the "UK variant." Health Secretary Matt Hancock too has claimed the country's response was working until the new variant hit.

But it's not that simple. Like in the first wave, the government has been slow to respond to rising case and death numbers with restrictions. It has failed to get an adequate contact-tracing and isolation system running. And it has, again, been slow on border controls, only closing "travel corridors" with more than 60 countries or territories in mid-January amid record-breaking daily death tolls.

Experts say the government hasn't learned from its past mistakes and still lacks a coherent strategy.

Prof. Anne Johnson, president of the UK's Academy of Medical Sciences, said there was a clear correlation with the relaxation of restrictions before Christmas and the recent spike in infections.

"The new variant is important and more transmissible, but that's not the only cause of the third wave. Let's be clear," she told CNN.

The real problem is even this expert doesn't get it. Read hope simpson study, look at the estimate 4 waves we have experienced and then you will see, March into April is going to be devastating!!!

  • israel should have reached herd immunity between previous infection and vaccination.

I do not think so. 7% of the population was infected. 40% vaccinated. Herd immunity should be starting up. The curve of infections and active cases should be bending. And they are:

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/israel/

    Deaths are lagging, as expected.

So what's going on. It would seem very bad news for vaccine manufactures.

I do not think so. It would only be bad news if many people who were vaccinated weeks ago are becoming sick now. That is, if the vaccinations are not working. If it can be shown that all of the people now being infected have not yet been vaccinated then there is no problem with the vaccine. In that case, the problem is with people and their behavior, or perhaps the problem is a more infectious form of the virus.

This post wasn't ment to be of any science value but to show the Hypocrisy in journalism.

I do not think it is hypocrisy. The experts are confused. It is not up to the journalists to decide what is happening. They should report both sides of the story.

  • If Covid vaccines stop working, how quickly can drugmakers respond?

Pharmaceutical industry faces new race as worrying variants emerge

    https://news.google.com/articl…=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

It was the fastest vaccine development in history. But now pharmaceutical companies are preparing to do it all over again.

With the emergence of worrying variants that could make Sars-Cov-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, more transmissible, more deadly or more resistant to vaccines, the drugmakers that responded in record time are rushing to head off new threats.

Scientists are confident they can respond. The question is: how quickly?

  • AstraZeneca vaccine may not go to older people, EU medicines chief suggests

    https://news.google.com/articl…=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine may be authorised only for younger people in Europe, because there is insufficient data on how well it works in the over-65s, the head of the regulatory body has suggested.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is expected to authorise the AstraZeneca vaccine at the end of this week, a month after it was approved in the UK.

Emer Cooke, the EMA’s executive director, told the European parliament that it is examining the “totality of the data” provided by AstraZeneca across different age groups.

  • With All Eyes on Covid-19, Drug-Resistant Infections Crept In

The spread of other dangerous germs is surging — a result, in part, of the chaotic response to the pandemic

    https://news.google.com/articl…=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

As Covid-19 took hold over the last year, hospitals and nursing homes used and reused scarce protective equipment — masks, gloves, gowns. This desperate frugality helped prevent the airborne transfer of the virus.

But it also appears to have helped spread a different set of germs — drug-resistant bacteria and fungi — that have used the chaos of the pandemic to grow opportunistically in health care settings around the globe.

These bacteria and fungi, like Covid-19, prey on older people, the infirm and those with compromised immune systems. They can cling tenaciously to clothing and medical equipment, which is why nursing homes and hospitals before the pandemic were increasingly focused on cleaning rooms and changing gowns to prevent their spread.

That emphasis all but slipped away amid an all-consuming focus on the coronavirus. In fact, experts warn, the changes in hygiene and other practices caused by the Covid-19 fight are likely to have contributed to the spread of these drug-resistant germs..erms..

Just another example of why the world needs early outpatient treatment for all, maybe save people from long Covid or MIS - C, and save an already exhausted healthcare system from total collapse
