Furthermore, a new group of people becomes vulnerable every year in a nursing home. To be blunt, they do not last for long.

I do not think you would see that dramatic curve that began to fall immediately after vaccinations began if the main cause was most of the vulnerable patients already dying. That would be an unlikely coincidence.

I do not think it is "deceiving." I think your analysis was wrong.

You didn't bother to research Jed. In the past year nursing home occupancy is down by over 10% due to death, removal, and no takers. If I followed your logic then masks do not prevent transmission of the virus as 195,000 nursing home residents were attended to by mask wearing professionals as the general public were banned from visiting.

The new study found five nursing home residents tested positive during two separate outbreaks with multiple negative tests in between, suggesting they were reinfected with the virus.

Between mid-July and mid-August, 20 residents and five health-care personnel tested positive for the virus, according to the study.

Publishing a World Health Organization-led guidance report on the condition, often referred to as "long COVID" or "post-COVID syndrome", experts said around one in 10 COVID-19 patients are still unwell 12 weeks after their acute infection, and many suffer symptoms for far longer.

"This is a condition that can be extremely debilitating. Those suffering from it describe a varying combination of overlapping symptoms... (including) chest and muscle pain, fatigue, shortness of breath ... brain fog (and) many others," said Martin McKee, a professor at the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies who led the report.

Hans Kluge, the WHO's European regional director, said long-COVID could have "severe social, economic, health and occupational consequences".

"The burden is real and it is significant," he said.

He urged health authorities to listen to patients' concerns, take them seriously, and establish services to help them.

Growing evidence from around the world points to many thousands of people experiencing long-COVID. The condition appears not to be linked to whether a patient had a severe or mild infection.

An initial report by Britain's National Institute for Health Research last year suggested long-COVID may be not one condition, but multiple syndromes causing a rollercoaster of symptoms affecting the body and mind.

Kluge noted that as with any new disease, much remains unknown about COVID-19.

"We need to listen and ... understand. The sufferers of post-COVID conditions need to be heard if we are to understand the long-term consequences and recovery from COVID-19," he said. Since ~14% died from COVID-19, they must have gained 4% from somewhere. A large percent of people in nursing homes die every year anyway. I suppose some of the ones who died from COVID would have died from something else. Perhaps fewer died from influenza, which is way down this year, because people are taking so many precautions to prevent COVID.

I do not follow what you mean. It makes no sense, and it does not seem to have anything to do with the article. Of course masks reduce the transmission. But of course they do not prevent it completely. Anyone can see that. Many doctors and nurses have gotten sick or died from COVID-19, even though they all wear masks.

For example, they know that putting patients on the stomachs can be a big help -- even saving lives. Because doctors have been willing to learn new lessons, the case mortality rate has fallen by about half. So, they are willing to learn, and they have improved treatment a lot. Why do you think they are not willing to learn early treatment methods?

Getting infection numbers down now not only will help prevent the virus from further mutating but it will also give vaccines a better shot at remaining effective.

The authors estimate that among the 906,849 total COVID-19 hospitalizations that had occurred among US adults as of November 2020, 30% were attributable to obesity; 26% to hypertension; 21% to diabetes; and 12% to heart failure.

From the data, the investigators estimate that almost two thirds (63.5%) of the hospitalizations were attributable to these cardiometabolic conditions and that those hospitalizations would have been preventable had those conditions not been present.

They estimate that a 10% reduction in these four cardiometabolic conditions would potentially have prevented 11.1% of COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The authors believe more should be done to promote healthy lifestyle measures to improve overall cardiometabolic health and potentially minimize the risk for severe COVID-19.
