Speedy variants power virus surge sweeping Europe

MILAN (AP) — The virus swept through a nursery school and an adjacent elementary school in the Milan suburb of Bollate with amazing speed. In a matter of just days, 45 children and 14 staff members had tested positive.

Genetic analysis confirmed what officials already suspected: The highly contagious coronavirus variant first identified in England was racing through the community, a densely packed city of nearly 40,000 with a chemical plant and Pirelli bicycle tire factory a 15-minute drive from the heart of Milan.

“This is the demonstration that the virus has a sort of intelligence, even if it is a single-cell organism. We can put up all the barriers in the world and imagine that they work, but in the end, it adapts and penetrates them,” lamented Bollate Mayor Francesco Vassallo.

Abstract

Several studies point to the antimicrobial effects of ELF electromagnetic fields.

Such fields have accompanied life from the very beginning, and it is possible

that they played a significant role in its emergence and evolution. However, the

literature on the biological effects of ELF electromagnetic fields is controversial,

and we still lack an understanding of the complex mechanisms that make such

effects, observed in many experiments, possible. The Covid-19 pandemic has

shown how fragile we are in the face of powerful processes operating in the bio-

sphere. We believe that understanding the role of ELF electromagnetic fields in

regulating the biosphere is important in our fight against Covid-19, and research

in this direction should be intensified.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A group of scientists led by prominent astrophysicist Scott McIntosh at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), widely respected as a leading institution in the atmospheric and related sciences, has predicted that a new solar cycle could be one of the strongest on record.

The solar cycle is the cycle that the sun’s magnetic field goes through approximately every 11 years.

So what is a solar cycle? The sun is a huge ball of electrically-charged hot gas. The sun’s high temperatures cause these charged gas to constantly move, generating a powerful magnetic field. The sun's magnetic field goes through a cycle, called the solar cycle.

In areas where the magnetic fields are exceptionally strong, we see these dark spots, called sunspots, on the surface of the sun. It’s like a storm on the sun. The more sunspots we see, the more solar activity there is.

Solar Cycle 24 was a weak cycle, peaking with a maximum sunspot number of 116 sunspots (the average is 179). In their report in Solar Physics, the forecast is for Solar Cycle 25 to have a maximum sunspot number of somewhere between 210 and 260.

This would be one of the most active cycles ever observed. NASA projects a peak of 115 sunspots, similar to the cycle just completed.

According to the report, they believe that the sun has alternating 22-year magnetic cycles that interact to produce the well-known, nearly 11-year sunspot period as a by-product.

Forecasting sunspots is important since solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that originate from them can send disruptive bursts of magnetic energy toward Earth.

A solar flare is a sudden flash of increased brightness on the sun, usually observed near its surface and in close proximity to a sunspot group. Powerful flares are often, but not always, accompanied by a coronal mass ejection.

The biggest solar storm ever recorded was the infamous Carrington Event in early September 1859.

According to History.com, on the morning of Sep. 1, 1859, amateur astronomer Richard Carrington ascended into his observatory near London. Looking into the clear blue sky, he pointed his telescope toward the sun and began to sketch a cluster of enormous dark spots that freckled its surface. Suddenly, Carrington spotted what he described as “two patches of intensely bright and white light” erupting from the sunspots. Five minutes later the fireballs vanished, but within hours their impact would be felt across the globe.

That night, telegraph communications around the world failed with sparks shocking operators and setting papers on fire. All over the planet, colorful auroras illuminated the nighttime skies, glowing so brightly that birds began to chirp and laborers started their daily chores, believing the sun had begun rising. Some thought it was the end of the world. The massive solar flare had the energy of 10 billion atomic bombs.

The hunt for the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic must continue. That is the lesson learned after the World Health Organization (WHO) team's visit to China produced no answers to key questions about how and where the coronavirus started. Team members provided a summary of their month-long investigation in Wuhan, China, during a Feb. 9 news briefing.

In December 2019, the first cases of COVID-19 were reported as "viral pneumonia" in Wuhan. The WHO team discounted the widely believed theory that the virus accidentally leaked from a Wuhan laboratory. Instead, they believe that SARS-CoV-2 first passed to people from an animal. That the team has accepted two hypotheses promoted by China's government and media makes the report's impartiality questionable. China has floated the possibility that the virus came from an animal outside China and may have spread on frozen wildlife and other cold-packaged goods.

When the virus began to spread last year, allegations abounded that the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which collected extensive virus samples, may have caused the outbreak by accidentally or deliberately leaking the virus into the community. China strongly rejected that possibility. The WHO team said the accidental laboratory leak hypothesis does not explain how the virus was introduced to the human population, and indicated this is an area for future study. Unfortunately, this is akin to giving China a clean chit.

The WHO team concludes rather bureaucratically: "Our initial findings suggest that the introduction through an intermediary host species is the most likely pathway and one that will require more studies and more specific targeted research." This obfuscates the fact that the virus was first identified in China and the only thing to be investigated is its origin there. When experts from 10 countries arrived in China on Jan. 14, the Chinese government put limits on their research into the outbreak and prevented the WHO scientists from speaking with reporters.

This means they received both doses of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, as Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine was just authorized by the FDA on February 27.

“With a breakthrough case, you may develop an infection after you’ve been vaccinated—and at least two weeks have passed since you were fully vaccinated,” says William Schaffner, M.D., an infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

The two-week marker is important, says infectious disease expert Amesh A. Adalja, M.D., senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security—your body should have enough time to develop antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 after that timeframe. Before then, you won’t necessarily have the built-up immunity you need to fight off an infection. “Cases that occur before [the two-week mark] are not breakthrough cases,” Dr. Adalja says.

Why do breakthrough COVID-19 cases happen?

“These vaccines that we’re using are fabulous but they’re not perfect,” Dr. Schaffner says. “At best, they’re 95% effective in preventing serious illness, but minor illnesses can occur.”

Thomas Russo, M.D., professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York, says that experts “expect” that some people will still test positive after being fully vaccinated. “What we’re interested in is whether these cases are mild, symptomatic, or asymptomatic,” he notes.

US Researchers Say COVID-19 Antiviral Shows Promise

Pharmaceutical giant Merck and an American laboratory announced progress Saturday in the design of an oral drug against COVID-19. Their antiviral has shown positive effects in reducing the viral load in current tests.

"Knowing that there is an unmet need for antiviral therapy for SARS-CoV-2, we are encouraged by these preliminary results," Wendy Painter, chief drug officer at Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, said in a statement.

Merck interrupted its work on two potential COVID-19 vaccines at the end of January but continues its research on two treatments against the disease, including molnupiravir, developed with the American company Ridgeback Bio.

The drug significantly reduced the viral load in patients after five days of treatment, the company said Saturday in a meeting with infectious-disease specialists.

I think diet/lifestyle is a variable that isn't truly considered in the coronavirus and collective immune responses to infectious diseases in general. Including their ageing population as a factor.

Total reported cases rose across the globe in the last week of February after six weeks of decline, driven in part by new, more virulent variants that transmit between people at startlingly higher rates than the initial strains out of Wuhan, China, and northern Italy.

"This is disappointing, but not surprising," World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters last week. "This is a global crisis that requires a consistent and coordinated global response."

The United States recorded about 66,000 new cases a day over the last week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), down 73 percent from the apex reached in early January and similar to levels of transmission from October. But the precipitous decline of late January and early February has plateaued in recent days, raising fears that a new wave is just around the corner.
