A small Israeli study indicates that some of the new coronavirus variants may put people who have been vaccinated at higher risk of breakthrough infections, though U.S. health officials questioned some of the wording used in the preliminary research.
These types of cases are called “breakthrough infections,” which occur when someone who has completed their COVID-19 vaccination later gets sick from the virus.
The preprint, which published Friday and has not been peer reviewed, gained attention over the weekend after it said that the B.1.351 variant was more likely to infect people in Israel who had been vaccinated with Pfizer Inc.’s PFE COVID-19 vaccine, compared with other strains of the virus
That preprint, as it were, was about as confusing as you possibly could be,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief medical advisor, told reporters during a White House briefing. “It made it seem like you were more likely to get the [B.1.]351 if, in fact, you were vaccinated against the mRNA. That wasn’t the case. If you were going to get infected with anything, you would get infected with the more difficult variant, which was 351. That doesn’t mean you have a greater chance of getting it.”
Pfizer directed questions about the study to the authors.
What we know so far about vaccines and variants
Fauci said that clinical data so far indicates the mRNA vaccines developed by Pfizer and BioNTech SE BNTX , as well as Moderna Inc. MRNA , still provide protection against B.1.1.7, but vaccine efficacy is thought to drop against the B.1.351 variant, which is a less common strain of the virus at this time, at least in the U.S.
Both mRNA vaccines had very high efficacy rates in Phase 3 clinical trials, with each reporting rates around 95%, though the trials were conducted last fall, before two of these new variants had been detected. The real-world effectiveness rate for both of these vaccines is thought to be closer to 89%, according to at least one preprint study published by the Mayo Clinic in February, but that is still considered a very strong rate of protection against the virus.

An Israeli lab has “cured” mice suffering from an immune reaction like that found in serious coronavirus patients, using molecules from probiotic yoghurt.
The lab triggered a cytokine storm — the immune reaction that causes the extreme inflammations suffered by many serious COVID-19 patients — in dozens of mice.
“We induced aggressive cytokine storms in mice, akin to those of COVID-19 patients who are in very critical condition, and healed 100 percent of those that received the molecules,” Prof. Raz Jelinek of Ben Gurion University told The Times of Israel. “But the other mice all died within two to three days of the cytokine storm being induced.
“Among those who received the molecules, clinical conditions and clinical markers improved to normal levels, and they lived. If it turns out that this could be given to critical people, and have the same effect, that would be wonderful.”
The cytokine storm research is one of a string of experiments conducted by Jelinek, his PhD student Orit Malka, and their colleagues, after they identified two molecules in a fermented milk drink called kefir that they say deliver major therapeutic benefits and could be used to make drugs of the future.
“The research leads us to believe that we can make drugs and therapeutics based on these molecules that are extracted from yoghurt,” he said. “They will utilize both the anti-inflammatory qualities of the molecules, that fight the cytokine storm, and antibacterial qualities that we identified.”
Microbiome expert Eran Segal, who has expressed skepticism for popular claims promoting probiotics, said the new research is a “step forward” elevating the discussion by providing peer-reviewed scientific insights.
“The fact that they found molecules that are relevant is definitely plausible and could be important,” said Segal, a Weizmann Institute computational biologist who was not connected to the study, adding that he takes seriously the claim that they could form the basis of drugs.
“This could be a source of future therapeutics,” he said.

Israel and the UK have the highest percent of the population vaccinated. The vaccination campaign has been an overwhelming success in both countries. They are on the verge of eliminating the disease. In Israel, the whole of society is now back to normal, with schools, restaurants and other facilities the way they were before the pandemic. 1. You made that up. There have been no deaths from blood clots or anything else from these two vaccines. When you make stuff up, maybe you yourself come to believe your own lies, but anyone who bothers to look up the facts will see you are lying. So what is the point? Who are you trying to fool?
2. Even if the vaccines had killed 1000 people, they will save millions of lives, so the tradeoff is worth it.

Federal authorities on Tuesday recommended that states stop using Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine while an investigation is conducted into six serious cases of clotting problems — one of which was fatal — that were reported among women who received the vaccine.
If this was actually caused by the vaccines, it is the first valid report of a death.
It is very foolish to stop administering a vaccine that will definitely save millions of lives because it might kill one or two people per million. Or more likely 1 per 100 million. All vaccines and all other public health measures, including even seat belts, will harm or kill a few people per million. Politicians who make such decisions are pandering to ignorance. They have no concept of risks versus benefits.

The clotting problem appears to be quite rare. As of Monday, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine had been administered in this country. But officials acknowledged the investigation — and increased use of the vaccine, which was shipped in record numbers last week — could lead to the discovery of more cases.
As noted in the Stat article, the clotting problem may be occuring with modified adenovirus vaccines. These include J&J, AstraZenica, Sputnik V and CanSino. There have been no reports of clotting with the mRNA based vaccines. Quote:

There is a surge of cases in Michigan of the UK B.1.1.7 variant. The governor of Michigan has asked Uncle Sam to expedite vaccines and send more experts to slow down the surge. Unfortunately, this will not work well, for reasons relating to the biology of the virus and the vaccines. It would work with some other viruses, such as smallpox. The vaccines are effective against the UK variant, as shown in the UK. Vaccination and infection promote the formation, tissue distribution, and clonal evolution of B cells, which encode humoral immune memory. We evaluated convergent antigen-specific antibody genes of similar sequences shared between individuals in pediatric and adult blood, and deceased organ donor tissues. B cell memory varied for different pathogens. Polysaccharide antigen-specific clones were not exclusive to the spleen. Adults had higher clone frequencies and greater class-switching in lymphoid tissues than blood, while pediatric blood had abundant class-switched convergent clones. Consistent with reported serology, pre-pandemic children had class-switched convergent clones to SARS-CoV-2 with weak cross-reactivity to other coronaviruses, while adult blood or tissues showed few such clones. The results highlight the prominence of early childhood B cell clonal expansions and cross-reactivity for future responses to novel pathogens.
