  • This is the KEY issue in the outbreak. I'd like to believe you, but I don't.

    (1) UK was testing traced people + those with acute pneumonia. Neither measurement serves to determine the number of people infected showing symptoms so mild they would not be tested.

    (2) Everyone will tend to be optimistic as long as possible about this, because a lower number of silent cases means a higher percentage of the population needing treatment, a higher percentage dying.

So I'm staying open on this. Is the "10-20X" more silent infections than counted correct for UK, Italy? Or is it not. It will make a very big difference to everyone which is the case.

  • Is there enough sample data to determine what is timing, say in Italy or South Korea, Japan etc, from initial diagnosis to peak to recession of infections?

    1 week, 1 month, 90 days etc?

Imagine it would look like a bell curve but unsure and would like to see some hard data.

Too early for a bell curve (or hint of one from anywhere but China. However, I would expect to see a skewed curve, sharp rise at the front. slow trail-off at the end. This baby is here to stay it seems, so an infection rate of zero is a find hope.

This is an old paper relating to Sars, but evidence is starting to emerge that it is a helpful treatment for Covid 19.

Virol J. 2005 Aug 22;2:69. Chloroquine is a potent inhibitor of SARS coronavirus infection and spread.

Vincent MJ1, Bergeron E, Benjannet S, Erickson BR, Rollin PE, Ksiazek TG, Seidah NG, Nichol ST.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus (SARS-CoV). No effective prophylactic or post-exposure therapy is currently available.

RESULTS:We report, however, that chloroquine has strong antiviral effects on SARS-CoV infection of primate cells. These inhibitory effects are observed when the cells are treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic advantage. In addition to the well-known functions of chloroquine such as elevations of endosomal pH, the drug appears to interfere with terminal glycosylation of the cellular receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. This may negatively influence the virus-receptor binding and abrogate the infection, with further ramifications by the elevation of vesicular pH, resulting in the inhibition of infection and spread of SARS CoV at clinically admissible concentrations.

    CONCLUSION

Chloroquine is effective in preventing the spread of SARS CoV in cell culture. Favorable inhibition of virus spread was observed when the cells were either treated with chloroquine prior to or after SARS CoV infection. In addition, the indirect immunofluorescence assay described herein represents a simple and rapid method for screening SARS-CoV antiviral compounds.

Thanks, Alan Smith , it is highly probable this is right, this is after all SARS2, but you know that no authorities will recommend it publicly, so knowing this will help those with enough wisdom to not wait for authorities to come to save the day.

It’s really cheap around here but is not really available without medical indication as it is controlled for not allowing self treatment as this area has erradicated mosquitoes many times and the health authorities want to know if there is any case of diseases that need this.
