Facing uncertainty and adversity, the lesson of Admiral Stockwell
Being held prisoner in Vietnam, he explained well that he knew he would get out of it and that he would get something great out of it, but he explained just as much that those who collapsed were optimists, who saw short-term outcomes, like "we will be out at Christmas" ...
"It's a very important lesson," Stockdale concluded, turning to Collins. You should never confuse faith in your victory in the end - which you can never afford to lose - with the discipline to face the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they may be. "
There are two advantages to accepting reality. First, it clears the mind so that it can act, because it is no longer encumbered by fantasies of the afterlife or the singing tomorrows. Then, reality constitutes the basis on which we will be able to act. Acting from reality, with what you have at hand, is the second principle. For Stockdale, acting is first to survive, then to organize networks of communication and resistance within the prison. He does so with all the more determination that he has admitted that he is here for a long time and that he cannot count on the mercy of his jailers or on outside help. He does with what he has at hand, and with the people he has on hand, build his network, between two sessions of torture. He has no illusions, but he is moving forward. Finally, accepting the uncertain reality is telling yourself that you can try to take advantage of the situation in which you find yourself. This is the third principle. It was not easy for Stockdale, for whom surviving was already a victory, but it is possible for us who can do more than survive. While there is little we can do about the situation as it is, we can control how we respond to it.
According to him, you have to give up specific hopes, to focus on the bitter and violent fight of every day, just having the certainty that by fighting well, without giving up, we will get out of it.
I immediately made the link with cold fusion, where I faceda series of disappointed hopes, but also participated in open-ended initiatives.
Let's not be optimistic, not pessimistic either, just fighting knowing that victory will be at the end, but at the end of a long road that we are discovering, step by step.
