    Whether Cold Fusion or Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions, U.S. Navy Researchers Reopen Case

    Spurred on by continued anomalous nuclear results, multiple labs now working to get to bottom of story

    After more than three decades of simmering debate in specialized physics groups and fringe research circles, the controversy over cold fusion (sometimes called low-energy nuclear reactions or LENRs) refuses to go away. On one hand, ardent supporters have lacked the consistent, reproducible results and the theoretical underpinning needed to court mainstream acceptance. On the other, vehement detractors cannot fully ignore the anomalous results that have continued to crop up, like the evidence for so-called “lattice-confinement fusion” adduced last year by a group at NASA’s Glenn Research Center.

    Scientists at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division have pulled together a group of Navy, Army, and National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) labs to try and settle the debate. Together, the labs will conduct experiments in an effort to establish if there’s really something to the cold fusion idea, if it’s just odd chemical interactions, or if some other phenomenon entirely is taking place in these controversial experiments.

  • New USPTO Patent Application - Low Energy Nuclear Reactor

    United States Patent Application 20210090752 March 25, 2021

    Assignee: United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of the Navy

    Abstract

    A low energy nuclear reactor (LENR) is provided for producing thermal energy. The LENR includes first and second vessels and an ignitor. The first vessel defined a first chamber containing LENR fuel. The second vessel disposed inside the first vessel defines a second chamber containing exothermic material. The ignitor initiates the exothermic material by sparking. The LENR fuel reacts to produce the thermal energy in response to initiation heat from the exothermic material.

  • This patent is a bombshell (not literally we hope!). It seems to describe a working device where a LENR reaction is initiated by thermite, and electricity is extracted by Seebeck type thermoelectric devices. It will be interesting to see how the USPTO deals with this:

    STATEMENT OF GOVERNMENT INTEREST

    [0001] The invention described was made in the performance of official duties by one or more employees of the Department of the Navy, and thus, the invention herein may be manufactured, used or licensed by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.

    Thanks for the heads up Lou Pagnucco , the assignee is the US Navy, tho, not NASA, but is important as it is surprising to see a patent plainly talking about LENR in no unambiguous terms.

    This paragraph of the background of the invention is well written:

    “[0007] The second type of apparatus consisting of a vessel containing palladium, nickel or any other metal that can absorb hydrogen ions in a powder, wire, foil, or mesh configurations is exposed to ionic hydrogen or deuterium. Many variations on the configurations of these liquid and solid reactors have been introduced and studied, and many observations of excess heat production, which cannot be explained by conventional chemistry, have been reported. Although the exact nature of LENR remains unknown, the volume of experimental results argues in favor of the validity of the phenomenon of LENR.

    Trying to pinpoint who are the inventors and if they are newcomers or old timers in the LENR field (the main inventor, Pearl Rayms-Keller, so far, seems to be a newcomer, which is perhaps a good thing).

    Are they going to use coal and firewood in the second chamber to trigger lent?

    As magicsound already stated, the reaction heater chamber uses what is normally known as thermite. The LENR fuel is conveniently described in very general terms, so in that regard there’s not much new information in the patent other than it’s a patent being applied for in behalf of the US Navy so they had to have done research for this.

    I went to the IEEE article and posted this:

    Wow, that was fast!!! These US Navy researchers are talking about a new research project to elucidate the reality of LENR, and three days later a patent application for a LENR reactor is published by the USPTO and the owner is the US Navy!!! Did we miss something in between?

    They take long to publish comments there, I hope this one gets through the filters.

    Reminds me back 3 years ago when Alan started a thread to provide an inventory of all the LENR active players. Every time we thought we had a comprehensive directory, another and another, then yet another name popped up. We never came close to our objective.

    My guess is that we only see the tip of the iceberg of those involved. Lots of reasons few come forward. Main one of course being the public backlash, and threat to professional reputation.

    Were it not for US government (mainly the USN/NASA) involvement, one could make a good argument LENR would be dead, or nearly so.

  • Dreamers, I like some copy/past here (word after word) between these 2 patents for example here ahhahaha:

    This one

    US 20210090752

    [0027] The powder in the fuel mixture consists largely of spherical particles having diameters in the nanometer (nm) to micrometer range (.mu.m), for example between 1 nm and 100 .mu.m. Variations in the ratio of reactants and catalyst tend to govern reaction rate of the LENR fuel and are not critical. However, a suitable mixture can include a starting mixture of approximately 50% nickel, approximately 20% lithium, and approximately 30% LAH. Within this mixture, nickel acts as a catalyst for the reaction, and is not itself a reagent. While nickel is particularly useful because of its relative abundance, its function can also be accomplished by other elements in IUPAC group-10 transition metals of the periodic table, such as platinum (Pt) or palladium (Pa). The ignition fuel may be composed of a mixture containing aluminum (Al) and iron oxide (Fe.sub.2O.sub.3).

    And this one:

Variations in the ratio of reactants and catalyst tend to govern reaction rate and are not critical. Within this mixture, nickel acts as a catalyst for the reaction, and is not itself a reagent. While nickel is particularly useful because of its relative abundance, its function can also be carried out by other elements in column 10 of the periodic table, such as platinum or palladium.

    things are so funny today hahahaha

  • Well... for sure a good news, but nothing really impressive and new in the document. They simply replicated Rossi in a quite trivial way. In comparison dr. Parkhomov did a much more sophisticated work.

    However, IMO the most important points are those not explicitely written:

    1. It is at least the second confirmation that Rossi's "recipe" really work (BTW, there are many similarities with Rossi's patents and declarations, this means that they carefully studied them and probably witnessed or obtained some convincing results)...
    2. this is probably the first istitutional document that clearly states that LENR actually exists and works (other patents and papers always avoided to state it clearly);
    3. this patent teach (or confirm) us something important: the reaction, in this form, needs a very high temperature to be initiated and probably a very fast temperature rise. The structure of the reactor and the very high temperature may be a confirmation of Parkhomov's theory about thermal neutrinos playing a key role in the process;
    4. the patent is quite useless as a patent, since there are thousands of similar but different implementations that can do the same thing, completely bypassing the patent. I think it is more a way to timidly come out than an actual strategic filing;
    5. the simplicity of the implementation, its mechanical form and its "one shot" conception are more suiteble for weapons than for practical applications...
