Crockcroft was well aware of the issue in 1928.
Perhaps the math looks bad to you. This is because of the “missing” 300keV required to complete the Beryllium equation. The ~300keV readily appears as a product of Bremsstrahlung from the primary lithium reaction, in a real reaction of more than one fusion event at a time.
