Plan to dump iron into the oceans to capture carbon.

There never was any violation of any UN rule. UN rules cover poison only. Iron is a natural spice!

Once I can read about iron-rich sands I can imagine foundry sands and similar industrial waste rich of iron, but also rich of arsenic and another toxic metals, i.e. waste laundering scheme masked as a fertilization project. FM1 is right as many coastal areas apparently don't require iron fertilization.

I am aware of another independent project with similar intent - using byproduct of hydrogen generation to reduce acidity of the ocean.

  • Should we consider dumping multivitamins like Centrum?

    VitB?

there is evidence that widespread thiamine deficiency in fish may be caused by iron deficiency..(from Russ)

    iron deficiency ?

the root cause appears to be ocean acidification which reduces the bioavailabilty of iron..

pH in the human body is controlled between 7.35- 7.45.. with an ideal of 7.4

outside of these bounds we start to have problems.. i.e changes of > 0.05 units

below 7.35 we can start to hyperventlate to get rid of CO2..

the further down the pH goes the more problems we get. ..confusion.. headaches potassium loss.. etc

hydrogen ions affect lots of body systems..

of course phytoplankton can't control their pH so well..

From preindusrial ocean pH of 8.25 the present level is down around 8.1...

    i.e 0.15 pH units change

perhaps the fish are hyperventilating??? and the phytoplankton have a headache...??

And how about other microelements? Should we consider dumping multivitamins like Centrum?

It is a well known principle of nutrition that a single deficiency limits growth. It is often exemplified that if you have a barrel, the shortest stave will determine the amount of water you can store in it, no matter how longer the others are.

  • Look everybody knows its methane that's causing global warming, because its been known for ages that methane is four times more effective as a greenhouse gas over good old carbon dioxide. Positive feedback loop now in the poles releasing vast quantities of guess what methane. So tell me what good electric cars etc are good for again??? For example how will TESLAS prevent methane release from the poles??? Or indeed doing away with petrol and diesel or whatever. LENR is definitely the answer.??? :) :) :)

The analogy with the barrelakes me thinking that the theory was developed by peasants or in the pub at best.

In physical chemistry one exercise is to solve the green house gas kinetic equation. Fact:: Methane is 100x more active than CO2. not 4! doubling the degree of freedom finally goes into the exponent.

There seems to be an opening of excellent opportunity for anyone with global ambitions for planetary engineering to first try it in a sandbox environment on Mars.

    When the race into shallow

space between Bezos and Brandson is over, time to initiate stage two - who first dumps what onto Mars. Then the iron powder dumping might come handy.

Make it more interesting - mine iron powder enroute from passing asteroid.

Who linked salmon run to iron dumping? Try dump more toxic stuff and you see all marine life beaching trying to escape it.

All belongs to 'fun scientific facts' section.

Fun fact: DYK that increased iron concentration makes Pacific salmon horny?

  • Misconceptions Shouldn’t Hold Up Key Climate Solution - EXPOSEDbyCMD
Ocean Pasture Restoration offers a nature-based strategy to avoid climate ruin.
    www.exposedbycmd.org

This story is published as part of Covering Climate Now, a global collaboration of news outlets strengthening coverage of the climate story.

Nobody wants people to dump toxic waste into the oceans. But tragically, the very same natural micronutrients that are the most crucial for the oceans to be healthy and generate climate-restoring photosynthesis have been mislabeled by some as “toxic.”

This is a big mistake, as perhaps our best chance to properly manage the climate crisis is centered on the unique capacity of the oceans, when healthy, to generate the photosynthesis that can remove the ruinous 1 trillion tons of extra CO2 that we have put into the atmosphere.

After 12 years of investigative climate journalism, I have come to believe that Ocean Pasture Restoration, OPR, offers a uniquely realistic path to avoid climate ruin. OPR is a nature-based strategy to bring the oceans’ capacity for photosynthesis back to its historical norms in order to draw down enough CO2 from the atmosphere to give us a real chance to survive.

Nothing else comes close in terms of feasibility and practical ability to lower the damage of the CO2-caused greenhouse effect down to a liveable level. And, rather than requiring trillions of dollars from governments and donors, it can actually create profits in various enterprises including restored fisheries on a local level. It’s fast, cheap and safe — and we have no decent alternative solutions.

OPR restores the health of the oceans by replacing those natural trace nutrients, primarily iron, that have been lost in the last century due to a reduction in the amount of nutrient-rich dust blowing onto the oceans.

Unfortunately, OPR has been painted by some as the opposite of what it really is. This portrait can be summed up with one word that is repeated throughout all these misguided articles: toxic. Let’s pick out two for the purposes of illustration.

  • Personally, i think that CO2 race is already lost.

The only way, i imagine is extending tarpaulins in space over critical points.

By critical points, I mean, cost effective to bring down the temperature with a minimum of canvas area.

Now that Elon is going to send his clusters of bells into space, that would be a way forward.
