LENR is apparently a non-obvious multistage process involving the weak force. Initial claims of “cold fusion” poisoned the well and became the energetics third rail. There was also lack of validated physics understanding and usually only low heat levels produced. There was also a dearth of experiments focused on validating theory (or not), mostly variations on previous experiments vice the basic physics and efforts to identify such. It was often considered simply too good to be true…incredulity. There were observations, beginning in the 1600s, and still ongoing, of transmutations including silicon, carbon, magnesium, potassium into calcium, and many others in biological systems. Experiments, many carefully done, were conducted before the late 1980s primarily in France, Germany, and Russia. These cited transmutations observed occurring in plants, seeds, bacteria, microorganisms, and mammals. An oft cited instantiation is the calcium shell on chicken eggs. If calcium is withheld in the diet, apparently mica and potassium are transmutated. If these are absent, there are no shells. This occurs with no observed heat or radiation. From refs 31 and 32, the LENR effect has been replicated hundreds of times while using different materials and five different methods of energy addition. Each method is found to produce energy well in excess of any plausible chemical source and that is correlated with identified nuclear products. LENR patent holders include: Airbus, Google, Leonardo, Brillouin, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Widom-Larsen, Boeing, MIT, and the U.S. Navy. LENR produces heat, which can be utilized directly or converted to electricity via such as Sterling Cycles, Thermoelectrics, Pyroelectrics, T-PV, Etc. Recent research in Japan via long and careful experimentation, has proven that a major “missing controlled parameter” in the decades now of previous LENR research is the requirement for nano sized discrete surface morphology. As already noted, that enables localized energy concentration by orders of magnitude. Major organizations (including Google) are now conducting research aimed at understanding and sorting out sensitivities and optimization. The major issues going forward include development of a viable, proven theory to allow engineering, scaling, and safety. Given that, which at this point appears to be a work in progress, much with regard to power and energy could change, for climate/transportation/HVAC, energy costs overall, and in-space for propulsion, habs, ISRU, on body transportation.

  • With such a rolled up, hodge-podge, mixed up and totally unlike examples infused with bullshit masquerading as fact in the above summary it’s amazing that anyone other than crackpots would be interested.

The repeated story about chickens and transmuted eggs, presuming (very incorrectly) a lack of calcium in the soil of Brittany is interesting from a historical perspective but completely laughable when presented as fact. Elemental calcium makes up about 4% of the Earth’s crust and its content in soils reflects that fact strongly. Reminds me of the guy that was training his horse to not drink by reducing the water available over time until the horse no longer required it. Then it died. Or the tree that was scientifically determined to transmute water into wood because that was all it was given…

  • ...from Jean Paul's paper, linked above. Kervran was btw a Nobel Prize nominee.

    ....

Kervran pointed out that the ground in Brittany contained no calcium; however, every day a hen would lay a perfectly normal egg, with a perfectly normal shell containing calcium. The hens eagerly pecked mica from the soil, and mica contains potassium. It appears that the hens may transmute some of the potassium into calcium.

  • No it's wrong even if Kervran was a great great researcher who spent his entire live as a company doctor.

Started his researchs in relation with welders carbon monoxide poisoning.

His pseudo Nobel prize was a king of mockery to discredit his disruptive ways of thinking.

Are you sure calcium is evenly distributed in the earth's crust? Are you sure Kervan did not measure the calcium content of the local soil? I know little about him, but I believe he did. I do not think he merely stated that it is rare in this soil. I doubt any scientist would take him seriously if he simply stated this as fact without measuring.

I cannot judge these claims because I have not looked closely. Jean-Paul seems to take it seriously. He is a smart fellow, but even smart people sometimes believe stupid things.

If you have not examined Kervan's work closely, I recommend you tone down your critique. You might be wrong. Cold fusion and other discoveries in experimental science show that nature is full of surprises, including things we all thought were impossible.

  • From Jacques Ruer- extract from lettert about ARPA-E. Full text document in the 'news' thread

    10/23/2021

The American administration has multiple federal agencies.

One of them deals with energy: Department of Energy or DOE. In 2007 a new

branch called ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy) was created to

promote and finance innovative energy projects. Since 2009 ARPA-E has disbursed

$ 2,930 million to support 1,270 projects. Before deciding to finance projects,

the agency exercises an active watch to identify upstream the areas of research that

could emerge. This is how the LENR (RNBE) appeared as a worthy subject

of interest. Or more exactly worthy of renewed interest, since the subject had already been

evaluated by the DOE in 1989 and then in 2004 at the request of academics. At the time it was

concluded that there was not enough evidence and decided not to invest

    federal money in this area.

The attitude has changed because it is now the ARPA-E which has taken the initiative to revisit the

subject. A virtual workshop was held on October 21 and 22, 2021. Over a hundred

participants (many from outside the United States) were invited. The stated goal of the

approach was to identify at least one experimental set-up capable of providing energy

irrefutable, on demand and reproducible. This is considered to be the

essential step that will enable research funding to be initiated, to attract

academics and to initiate development. If this is achieved ARPA-E claims to be able to

commit around 10 million dollars in the next 2 years, or even 30 million

dollars in the next 5 years, without counting the contributions of private investors. No

    doubt there will be.

ARPA-E does not consider theoretical explanations to be a priority. If an

experiment works, then we will see the theorists take charge of the subject.

However, it recognizes that public acceptability will depend on an understanding of the phenomena and

    acculturation of the public.

During this event we therefore saw the various American actors present their

past results and describe what they would like to see funded to move forward.

Among the guests we could note the absence of actors who claim to be well advanced, in

    particular Black Light Power.

When we already know the existing publications we have learned nothing new. The feeling is

that current American researchers are stalling and have little new results to show.

Google has learnedly repeated that they have not seen any heat production but that they have

developed a real skill in calorimetry.

The University of Michigan is developing a micro-calorimeter.

The University of Texas worked in the utmost secrecy. We can see today that their

efforts have led to nothing. They say they are ready to collaborate with whoever wants. They have

precision calorimeters as well as a high precision spectrometer.

Brillouin showed what is already visible on their website. The heat generation is

double the energy absorbed from the network. They sold 4 licenses in Canada, South Korea,

Australia, New Zealand. The first market is the production of hot water but

Much more ambitious goals are possible. NASA took over the deuterium scattering experiments in palladium-silver alloys and published. Reactions are caused by gamma irradiation of titanium charged

with deuterium as well as by the alternate charging in a plasma of a stack

of nickel and silicon disks . NASA appears to be the only federal agency that has pursued

work of a limited scope but with perseverance.

We could feel in people's minds the weight of general mistrust, even rejection that has

prevailed in our field for the last 30 years on the part of the

scientific community , the patent office (USPTO), but also let's say it of the DOE until

    recently.

ARPA-E is now pressed by its parent company (DOE) to identify new

sources of clean energy capable of contributing to the control of climate change.

This agency is now the driving force after having been a drag for so long. It pushes for

development and promises possible funding. In order to justify this

change of attitude if necessary, the first invited presentation was that of Japan which showed the

results of NEDO and those of Clean Planet. The latter company has also confirmed

the testing of 1kW prototypes and its ambition for the future. However, these prototypes are

being "tested". Clean Planet does not claim to have facilities for the moment

    fully operational.

  • Actually NASA quotes

Major organizations (including Google) are now conducting research aimed at understanding and sorting out sensitivities and optimization

I like that NASA/Bushnell is the first mainstream paper to mention the (ongoing) Google Inc. LENR patent developments.

I imagine major organizations such as these are working to optimize a CMNS LEC type of LENR atomic battery device/reactor.

A few in this group are clearly capable of self financing serious efforts.

  • I think many in the field share the frustration Jacques Ruer shows in his recap of the meeting. He sounds particularly bitter about the lack of transparency among the US side of the community. He singles out BLP, Brillouin, Forsley/NASA, and in particular Robert Duncan with this comment:

"The University of Texas worked in the utmost secrecy. We can see today that their efforts have led to nothing. They say they are ready to collaborate with whoever wants. They have precision calorimeters as well as a high precision spectrometer."

Hopefully this does not portend a rift brewing between the Eur/Japanese and US researchers? I think there is plenty of blame to go around for why there has been so little progress since FP's, but the biggest reason has more to do with external factors such as the outright hostility shown by the mainstream, than from the communities internal inadequacies.

Some promising new developments as Ruer says also. ARPA-E may throw some money at LENR. Not mentioned was the Eur funded projects CleanHME, and HERMES. Both now well under way.

IMO there is a good chance more money for the field will be forthcoming from western governments. I say that because China has launched a hypersonic weapons delivery platform that by all accounts is far advanced over anything in the western arsenals. Some say it defies physics as we understand it. So they now pose an existential threat to all other countries.

That will surely motivate new research into exotic techs to counter, and LENR is one of those with great potential. Who knows...that may be why ARPA-E is knocking on the door.

Thanks. Nothing new in the video except for...ahem, a picture of a submarine. Or did I miss something? Can't blame anyone for making a pitch to the military in these times. Go where the money is I say.

  • So what are the results of the last workshop? Did it take place in the format of a brainstorming session or in the format of a discussion club?

Of course, it would be naive to expect it to make fateful decisions for LENR, but at least there should be some benefit from this meeting.
