    TrialSite News has been monitoring Australia and its approach to the Covid-19 pandemic response. The highly vaccinated continent (over 95% for those persons age 16 and above) has accumulated a record number of deaths since the beginning of 2022. Based on an analysis of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, population data shows total deaths nationwide are 18% higher starting in the March quarter of the year. These numbers were compared to the prior year, rising from 36,100 to 46,200 deaths. This mortality rate is primarily from breakthrough infections affecting the elderly and people with underlying conditions. The very people vaccines are supposed to protect. In the first three and a half months of 2022, Australian deaths from Covid-19 doubled the coronavirus mortality numbers from 2020 and 2021 combined.


    Australia was “Not Fit for Purpose” Pre-Pandemic

    An Australian government review of preparedness for the pandemic found that Australian authorities had not ordered enough vaccines for the population. "I think it would be prudent for all of us to realize that this virus isn't going away and there's nothing that we see that suggests that people won't continue to need to get a level of immunity, preferably, obviously, from a vaccine as opposed to being infected.” said Jane Halton, the former health department “boss” in Australia.


    The Australian government had applied near “draconian” measures in both lockdowns and their effort to vaccinate the population. Even with the extreme measures in place, Professor Hilton found the country was “not fit for purpose” and official health advice about vaccine eligibility was confusing. She included an “assessment” of the vaccines in her evaluation. Over the last week, for example, over 45,000 cases of Covid were reported averaging out to more than 6,000 per day. There are claims that 90% of Covid deaths in Australia are people who are fully vaccinated.


    In the Halton report, the professor claimed while Australia has achieved a high primary vaccination rate, the population is behind in the booster rate. Halton also found the harsh measures taken by the government weren’t followed up with updated policy “settings” which would’ve taken into account the high infection rates.


    The Australian government appears to be confused to a point where they’ve ordered more vaccines than needed. Regardless of the report, the Australian government’s harsh measures were ineffective and seem to have done more harm than good. Is the government now questioning the mass vaccination strategy?

    Abstract

    Using online surveys, we collected data regarding COVID-19-related loss of smell or taste from 69,841 individuals. We performed a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study and identified a genome-wide significant locus in the vicinity of the UGT2A1 and UGT2A2 genes. Both genes are expressed in the olfactory epithelium and play a role in metabolizing odorants. These findings provide a genetic link to the biological mechanisms underlying COVID-19-related loss of smell or taste.

    A Brazilian study published in the journal PNAS describes some of the effects infection by SARS-CoV-2 can have on the central nervous system.


    A preliminary version (not yet peer-reviewed) posted in 2020 was one of the first to show that the virus that causes COVID-19 can infect brain cells, especially astrocytes. It also broke new ground by describing alterations in the structure of the cortex, the most neuron-rich brain region, even in cases of mild COVID-19.


    The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of gray matter over the hemispheres. It is the largest site of neural integration in the central nervous system and plays a key role in complex functions such as memory, attention, consciousness, and language.


    The investigation was conducted by several groups at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the University of São Paulo (USP). Researchers at the Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio), D’Or Institute (IDOR) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) also contributed to the study.

    Severity of COVID-19 shows an extraordinary correlation with increasing age. We generated a mouse model for severe COVID-19 and show that the age-dependent disease severity is caused by the disruption of a timely and well-coordinated innate and adaptive immune response due to impaired interferon (IFN) immunity. Aggravated disease in aged mice was characterized by a diminished IFN-γ response and excessive virus replication. Accordingly, adult IFN-γ receptor-deficient mice phenocopied the age-related disease severity, and supplementation of IFN-γ reversed the increased disease susceptibility of aged mice. Further, we show that therapeutic treatment with IFN-λ in adults and a combinatorial treatment with IFN-γ and IFN-λ in aged Ifnar1−/− mice was highly efficient in protecting against severe disease. Our findings provide an explanation for the age-dependent disease severity and clarify the nonredundant antiviral functions of type I, II, and III IFNs during SARS-CoV-2 infection in an age-dependent manner. Our data suggest that highly vulnerable individuals could benefit from immunotherapy combining IFN-γ and IFN-λ.

    The National Institutes of Health (NIH) continues to direct public research funds to Peter Daszak and EcoHealth Alliance despite all the open questions concerning their role in serving as an intermediary between the U.S. government apex research institute and China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology. The origins of the novel coronavirus, a pathogen that killed over 1 million Americans and 6.55 million worldwide have never been proven. TrialSite reports yet another grant is allocated to the nonprofit that allegedly according to purported whistleblower has approached the Central Intelligence Agency for projects. Now the group secures public funding to search for coronavirus signs in bats in Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. The grant worth $653,392 comes courtesy of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the NIH. The grant starts September 21, 2022, and concludes August 31, 2023.


    The effort continues EcoHealth Alliance’s mission as a center of excellence for coronavirus research in the natural environment. Peter Daszak was on the record in an interview just before the pandemic that there are over 100 coronaviruses that occur in nature.


    Daszak and co. aren’t new to Southeast Asia, as they report in their grant proposal that their work and “preliminary data show that Southeast Asia has a high diversity of wildlife coronaviruses (CoVs), a large proportion of the population with frequent occupational and environmental exposure to wildlife, and limited surveillance at rural sites where outbreaks likely begin.”


    According to previous research involving “risk mapping” of “hotspots” the organization suggests at risk countries are the Southeast Asian nations mentioned above-- “directly to the south of China.”


    Daszak and crew will be looking for “spillover of novel CoVs from bats and other wildlife.” With the potential for novel viruses in these areas, they’ll be scouring the countryside for evidence from animals and people.

    Abstract

    Prevention of infection and propagation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a high priority in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Here we describe S-nitrosylation of multiple proteins involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection, including angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the receptor for viral entry. This reaction prevents binding of ACE2 to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, thereby inhibiting viral entry, infectivity and cytotoxicity. Aminoadamantane compounds also inhibit coronavirus ion channels formed by envelope (E) protein. Accordingly, we developed dual-mechanism aminoadamantane nitrate compounds that inhibit viral entry and, thus, the spread of infection by S-nitrosylating ACE2 via targeted delivery of the drug after E protein channel blockade. These non-toxic compounds are active in vitro and in vivo in the Syrian hamster COVID-19 model and, thus, provide a novel avenue to pursue therapy.

    Thousands of American teenagers may have suffered heart inflammation after getting a Covid jab, a study suggests.


    Researchers found up to one in 7,000 boys aged 12 to 15 years old developed myocarditis after receiving the Pfizer vaccine.


    The condition — which is mild for most but can cause a recurrent heart palpitation in rare cases — was most common after the second dose.


    Covid is also mild for most teenagers with only 1,745 Americans under-18 dying from the disease compared to more than 800,000 over-50s.

    Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has quickly become a global pandemic. Reports from different parts of the world indicate that a significant proportion of people who have recovered from COVID-19 are suffering from various health problems collectively referred to as “long COVID-19”. Common symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain, chest pain, muscle aches, headaches, and so on. Vitamin D is an immunomodulatory hormone with proven efficacy against various upper respiratory tract infections. Vitamin D can inhibit hyperinflammatory reactions and accelerate the healing process in the affected areas, especially in lung tissue. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with the severity and mortality of COVID-19 cases, with a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D found in patients with COVID-19 and acute respiratory failure. However, no evidence has been found to support a role of vitamin D supplementation in reducing symptoms of long-COVID-19. On the other hand, having a higher vitamin D level before SARS-CoV-2 infection or raising it rapidly at the first symptoms of infection can significantly reduce the risk and severity of COVID-19.

    The Law office of Siri & Glimstad reports that a lawsuit against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on behalf of the Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN) has led to the government’s release of the first set of data from its v-safe program. A smartphone-based program launched by the CDC specifically for COVID-19 vaccines, the system allows users to register and provide health check-ins post receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Last summer, the considerably gaining mainstream momentum made formal legal requests for access to this data. Then, after two lawsuits filed on behalf of ICAN followed by months of legal clashes, the CDC finally submitted thanks to a court order compelling it to share the data. Importantly, this data yield includes less than 4% of all individuals who received a COVID-19 vaccine across America.


    A Look at the Data—Not Good

    Now, thanks to this ICAN action, data associated with over 10 million v-safe users provided in v-safe’s pre-populated check-the-box fields leads to 782,913 persons (7.7%) reporting some kind of health event needing medical attention, emergency room intervention, and/or hospitalization. 25% of the v-safe users report events leading to missed school or work and/or stopped the flow of normal daily life.


    Over 71 million symptoms were reported in the pre-populated fields, meaning on average, over 7 symptoms were reported per v-safe users. These symptoms range from joint pain (4 million), 2 million of which were mild, to 1.8 million reports of moderate joint pain: 400,000 reported severe joint pain.


    What about infants?

    Children as young as 6 months have been vaccinated per continuous government pressure to vaccinate as many persons as possible from that tender age and up. 13,000 infants under 2 were registered in v-safe. Among these vulnerable children, 33,000 symptoms were reported, represented most frequently by irritability, sleeplessness, pain, and loss of appetite.


    What about product differentiation?

    Moderna is associated with more health/medical related incidents than the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Women experienced more problems than men.

    So the hospital entry check says. But the same statistics shows: No people due to Omicron in ICU/ventilator. Why? Nobody is left at week ends...Usually they empty ICU at week ends what cannot happen for real deep lung infections....
