COP<1.002? that's why the hype is needed.

It IS scientific progress .. they were examining the power in and out of a single pellet. The fact that only a small proportion of total laser energy reached that target is a separate matter of optical engineering.

Not holding my breath for commercialization.

And still wondering how they plan to handle the neutrons. (In Tokamaks they hope to capture their energy and prevent system damage.)

I see this latest NIF PR hype campaign, recall the “unexpected” results published in 2006 from Sandia Labs Z machine (4x thermal output vs kinetic energy input) achieving close to 4 billion degrees K in some of the experiments, and can only sigh.

Many technologies are maturing simultaneously and this will accelerate these small gains.

For example, a while back I posted an article on development of EUV chip etching machines. What does that have to do with anything? The machines use about 1% of the EUV from laser-fired tin droplet plasma to etch chips and the rest is absorbed by the machine as heat and whisked away asap because realistically at that power of EUV there is almost no such thing as a mirror. In the MWh range. So the ability to actually absorb the energy of a small fusion reactor is well understood. Plus superconducting magnets and superfast plasma control that was impossible 20 years ago are now purchase-able because CERN, ITER, giant radio telescopes, electric cars and other huge tech investments helped push those boundaries and figure out how to mass produce the once-ludicrous materials.

EUV has everything to do with IT investment...little to do with LENR or NIF investment.

so long as LENR /NIF results concentrate only on heat production there is little glamor..

however the recent Au Ta4 magnetic field may be a clue ..

Tangible progress has been made in LENR, proportionally much greater than in conventional fusion, if you consider that it has been done with basically some peanuts and a strong will from the ones determined to not let the research stop.

There is no "breakthrough": NIF fusion power still consumes 130 times more energy than it creates

NIF fusion power still consumes 150 times more energy than it creates. We are decades away from commercial fusion power plants.

This process is symmetric as long as no phonon coupling is active.
