  • Andrea Rossi has promised multiple-times, he will not get engaged in patent wars, as he planed to beat the competition with "cheap plentiful production from robotized factories". No robotized plant indeed ever existed and Rossi just wants to get rid of competition in the same way like every 2nd grade patent troll (he has in his ownwords over 140 patent applications submitted). Which I consider problematic just at the case of Piantelli, as I have multiple reasons to believe, he is actual founder of nickel fusion technology, not Andrea Rossi.


    Andrea Rossi disagrees with Musk he thinks intellectual property and patents are vital for technology companies. “To give away for free the Intellectual Property of a technology is a mistake that takes away from the real business that technology, because nobody invests seriously in a technology if there is not the right of the ownership of the connected IP,” Rossi wrote finally at his blog. One thing, Rossi seems to forget is that once companies become obsessed with the patents, the focus of the process turns to the legal process not the technology or the business.

  • Tesla is a loss-making sideline for Musk, and whilst he's to be commended for open sourcing, I think it's a strategic move to standardise charging technology. That might be wrong, I haven't checked - but I bet they are still keeping hold of any "self-driving" patents.

  • The Rossi story may still have some legs to it, as he may have held onto the secret sauce afterall. In his deposition, the IH lawyers asked why only he fueled the 4 "Big Frankies" in the primary Doral 1MW, and let the IH people fuel the older, smaller units composing the back-up 1MW at Doral. The old one never worked when needed. He kind of did not answer that one.


    IMO, IH's wording in their request to have Rossi's charges dismissed, is such that they hold out for the possibility that there may be a little something to the Rossi Effect.

    1. Could some of them relate to the processes used by JMP?


    2. What is the "White Dwarf derived pressure system combined with Casmir effect and Van der Waals forces" ?... This has to be one of the most intriguing patent applications titles I have ever heard of!

  • Well it's a very long shot I guess but I'm trying to think of possible endothermic processes that would not need material moved in and out.


    Adsorbtion in metal Hydrides is normally exothermic and desorption is normally equally endothermic.


    I was wondering if this balance could be modified by using other ways to add or remove hydrogen with out normal proces. I previously wondered about using ionization or desorption of excited hydrogen with less endothermic energy from the MH without desorption to recycle the hydrogen and heat the metal hydride.


    Converly I wondering if ions can be pushed into the metal hydride non thermally with reduced beating effect and then normally desorbed to cool the MH. And again recycle the hydrogen.


    Obviously the energy needed would need to come from somewhere but perhaps it could be a non thermal source so cooling could still occur.


    Probably there are plenty of flaws in this thinking though.

    Keep thinking. Nobody else in the world has found one yet. Though AR may have achieved another system involving total conversion of energy to mass.8)

  • If they've been abandoned during their provisional phase I don't think they will be published. That's what Industrial Heat also complained about, in a way.

  • That is because many if not all are 'abandoned' or what us Brits called 'orphan patents. Not enough hoops were jumped through, and insufficient fees paid to get them published. But their presence in the files of both patent attorney and patent office is potentially good evidential proof of prior art.

  • Some, or most of the list of applications may be provisional patent application filings.
    Provisional filings are not public for the first 12 months after the filing date.
    Most important reason for filing a provisional patent applicaton is that the inventor wants to be sure he is the first to file the invented matter.

    If found valuable within the 12 month time frame they can be continued by refering to them in a regular patent application filing.

    In that case the original provisional patent application number will appear in the regular patent application.

    These regular patent applications will become public 18 months after the original filing date and the provisional patent application will be made available for public eyes after those 18 + 12 months.


    If not found valuable by the inventor/patent attorney within the 12 month time period, these provisional patent application filings will never be made available for public eyes.


    The Rossi filing numbers can best be seached for at the Public Pair section of the USPTO.

    Again, you will only be able to find them if they are regular patent application numbers or provisional patent application numbers that are continued by refering to them in a regular patent application and only between 18 and 30 months onwards after date of filing.

  • I notice there have been several provisional applications for an "X-Rays transparent reactor" throughout the years. I wonder if it's for an X-Ray activation system for the reaction, that could be important. It could have some implications for third party observations in the past: for instance Francesco Celani measured energetic gamma peaks (counts only) during the January 2011 demo. What if Rossi tried to use an X-ray generator?

  • ISTR that Rossi says that ecats generate x-rays and Gammas internally, but they are stopped by the reactor walls.


    This sounds as if he's found a way to let the x-rays out. I don't see any way to use these to power a jet engine ... maybe it could be attached to an engine to give an x-ray image/movie of the engine in action.

    We know from the emails that Boeing was involved. In a 207-18 email Rossi says "We are ready to start experiments with a small and old jet engine."

    Even Leif Holmlid has suggested this in his lapsed patent application:

  • These ones are probably also very much related to what I previously posted. "Irradiation" by what? It could be X-rays, given the titles of other provisional patent applications Rossi made, and of course information from patents by other authors, as shown above.

    I just had a thought. An X-ray tube is essentially a vacuum tube where electrons are accelerated with a high voltage (typically tens-hundreds of kilovolts) towards the anode-metal target. In principle this doesn't sound too much different than what a QuarkX is supposed to be according to the most recent information.


    If X-ray irradiation can start the reaction, if the reaction itself can produce X-rays/low level gammas, and if conveniently an X-ray tube is a possible reactor configuration, then we have that the reactor itself, depending on the mode of operation, can be the activator for another reactor or even for itself. So perhaps this could be another possible reason for having a reactor transparent to X-rays.


    These provisional patent applications may thus be relevant to this idea too.

    Reminds me of the Cat and Mouse solution that was once introduced.

    Maybe not only heat control (by heat transfer rate and capacity) but also X-ray intentsity are both control parameters, or maybe even mainly X-ray intensity.

    In that case it would be nice to have a tuneable resistance for X-rays, e.g. at the skin of the reactor.

    In one of Piantelli's patent applications there are mechanical control mechanisms indicating such option.

    Of these, the one in the middle isn't in the list in the opening post. Can you guess why? The answer is probably that it's been used for the world patent application for the "Fluid Heater" patent that was granted in the USA and that Tom Darden referred to as part of the licensed Industrial Heat IP in an interview on Fortune. That provisional patent application won't be available on the USPTO website as it's likely been abandoned for a new similar one (the third one, filed in 2015), but it's available in the WIPO website on the public patent application page for "Fluid Heater".
