Having spoken to a couple of his SRI colleagues, I think they were a bit scared of him intellectually. There was always about him the air of a man who knew stuff nobody else did, which was probably correct. He could also be famously grumpy, the brilliant outsider, not really a team player though everybody had a sneaking regard for him. Probably why he was happy to quit SRI when the opportunity arose, though some of the staff always kept in touch.
