    The media blackout on an approved treatment for COVID-19 continues around the world. Even so called leaders in media tracking life sciences-related news utter not a word. TrialSite recently raised the question why no media in the West even mentioned Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray or “NONS” produced by Vancouver, Canada’s SaNOtize Research and Development Corp.


    After all, from Israel and Bahrain to Thailand and Indonesia to now India, this nasal therapy was now for sale as a treatment targeting COVID-19. Given that much of the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects nasal passageways, an approved, economical, accessible, and easy to administer treatment available at a pharmacy seems like big news. Are we missing something? In India, the drug is now available in pharmacies as Fairway. TrialSite readers report the product is available online in India. Back in India that some doctors warn not to use “indiscriminately” seems to be the most noticeable headline.


    Why did Indian regulators Authorize?

    Recently the Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Limited (Glenmark Pharma), an Indian generic pharmaceutical company received market authorization from the Control General of India as part of the accelerated approval process. This approval was based on Phase 3 clinical trial (CTRI/2021/08/035432) conducted at over 20 Indian trial sites including Peerless Hospital in Calcutta and others listed below.


    Titled “A clinical study to evaluate efficacy and safety of Nitric oxide nasal spray for treatment of COVID-19in the adult non-hospitalized patients” the study investigated use of NONs, two sprays in each nostril, six times a day or a maximum of seven days. As reported in Indian media, Nitric oxide is a pulmonary vasodilator, thus the spray not only does the drug create an active barrier that shields and even deactivates airborne pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, but it may serve to protect viral entry beyond the nasal passages.



    The Results

    The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm study at 20 trial sites across the world’s second most populated nation investigated the use o NONS in 306 patients. The study sponsors (SaNOtize Research and Development Corp. & Glenmark Pharma) reported on the results in a press release that the study drug “reduced the SARS-CoV-2 log viral load in COVID-19 patients by more than 94% within 24 hours of treatment, and by more than 99% in 48 hours as compared to saline control.”


    Moreover, in a subset of the study cohort considered high-risk (n=218), the sponsors reported a “statistically significantly greater proportion of patients who achieved a combination of clinical and virological cure, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) Progression Scale.” Noteworthy, the median time to negative PCR in the NONS group was twice as fast (4 days) versus the saline study group (8 days). The study participants were infected with different variants and no significant adverse events were reported in this study nor in the over 500 participants treated thus with NONs in clinical trials.


    Study results haven’t been peer-reviewed yet. However, undoubtedly Indian regulators applied risk-benefit analysis given the pandemic.


    Media Reports

    Recently HealthWorld, part of India’s Economic Times shared that Calcutta’s Peerless Hospital, a participating trial site, reported that some patients turned [SARS-CoV-2] negative within 72 hours of using the NONS product.


    A pharmacy manager Rajendra Khandelwal shared with the media “There is a lot of expectation around the nasal spray, and we are getting regular queries from patients.” That pharmacist did not, however, that generally cases were considerably down anyway.


    Fortune India did a piece on the approval last week as did several Indian media announce the press release. Yet a review online of press releases and articles reveals that TrialSite was the only Western media to cover this significant milestone. For example, STAT, the award-winning online news covering life sciences research and commercialization—not a peep.


    The media doesn’t share much in Israel either. The nasal spray is branded in that eastern Mediterranean nation as Enovid and while multiple media covered the clinical trials there—such as the Jerusalem Post.-–as well as Reuters reporting on the interim approval in that country.     RNA gene therapy does a general immune stimulation and at best adds 15% protection for Omicron but destroyed by the wrong antibodies. A bit better does it look for moderna. But vaccinated get tested 3..10 x less often than unvaxx so its (protection) all a fake...I urge to not believe such crap data.


    Look at UK data - vaccine report week 8. "Vaccinated" only (group size max. 30% 10% for age < 20) age <40 die more often than unvaxx and go up to 3x more often to hospital. So what protects is always recovered + vaccinated.

    Omicron is a totally harmless virus for most. The actual death figures are from long time delta patients and most deaths are with Omicron but not dying from Omicron.


    My wive her brother and also mother in law (Japan) all got Omicron. It was just a nasty cold at worst.

    Important:: Do some treatment and of course if you cant buy a good NOx spray use iodine lotion.

    I don't endorse the messenger, but if we're not going to isolate (Japan, New Zealand) then vaccines (available everywhere) or treatments (expensive, or unproven), or wear masks everywhere, than vaccines are our last best hope.
