    Abstract

Background Long-term complications after COVID-19 are common, but the potential cause for persistent symptoms after viral clearance remains unclear.

Objective To investigate whether gut microbiome composition is linked to post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS), defined as at least one persistent symptom 4 weeks after clearance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Methods We conducted a prospective study of 106 patients with a spectrum of COVID-19 severity followed up from admission to 6 months and 68 non-COVID-19 controls. We analysed serial faecal microbiome of 258 samples using shotgun metagenomic sequencing, and correlated the results with persistent symptoms at 6 months.

Results At 6 months, 76% of patients had PACS and the most common symptoms were fatigue, poor memory and hair loss. Gut microbiota composition at admission was associated with occurrence of PACS. Patients without PACS showed recovered gut microbiome profile at 6 months comparable to that of non-COVID-19 controls. Gut microbiome of patients with PACS were characterised by higher levels of Ruminococcus gnavus, Bacteroides vulgatus and lower levels of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Persistent respiratory symptoms were correlated with opportunistic gut pathogens, and neuropsychiatric symptoms and fatigue were correlated with nosocomial gut pathogens, including Clostridium innocuum and Actinomyces naeslundii (all p<0.05). Butyrate-producing bacteria, including Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii showed the largest inverse correlations with PACS at 6 months.

Conclusion These findings provided observational evidence of compositional alterations of gut microbiome in patients with long-term complications of COVID-19. Further studies should investigate whether microbiota modulation can facilitate timely recovery from post-acute COVID-19 syndrome.

    Significance of this study

What is already known on this subject?

Persistent symptoms after the convalescence period in patients with COVID-19 have been reported.

Emerging evidence supports the potential role of gut dysbiosis in the severity of COVID-19 infection.

The long-term impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the gut microbiome after the acute infection and whether gut microbiota composition affects risk of persistent symptoms in recovered patients with different severity of COVID-19 infection is unknown.

    What are the new findings?

Our results show that an individual’s gut microbiome profile may affect their susceptibility to long-term complications of COVID-19.

Gut microbiome pattern reflects different symptoms in patients with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS).

Distinct gut microbiota composition at admission is associated with occurrence of PACS at 6 months.

How might it impact on clinical practice in the foreseeable future?

These findings provide new insights into the intricate association between the gut microbiome and the long-term sequelae after COVID-19 infection.

Microbiome-based profiling might be used as a tool in early risk stratification for occurrence of post-acute COVID-19 syndrome.

  • The UK seems to have written off around £4.7Bn in fraudulent Covid support payments, some made to newly formed companies that were not even trading.

could be possible to move the Covid topic back to its original one? It is unfairly flodding Playground one. I'm mainly interested in Rossi Magician saga ones and it's quite hard to find them in this large amount of fat comments, full of copy/pasted text and large pictures, dedicated to Covid.

You have to complain with google... Google did threat to block all sites containing facts the establishment does not like. E.g. virus origin is US lab or vaccine do barely work or "vaccines" did kill some X * 10'000 people etc...

    Playground is not google indexed....

  • UK HSA still reports:: Roche N seropositivity and 98.1% (95% CI 97.9% - 98.3%) Roche S
seropositivity for the period of 16 August to 7 November 2021 (weeks 33 to 44 2021).

This shows that > 90% of all UK citizen are recovered already 18% = 90% of 20% unvaxx...

So all statistics about vaccine efficiency rates etc. have no more meaning as we simply do not know the fractions of recovered among different age groups. One thing is clear as of July 50% UK recovered rate definitely was > 50% already. So basically the groups are between 60..90% recovered.

One result of this is: Vaccine = gene therapy do barely work. At best 15..40%...

To many fake efficiency studies have been published so far. The worst was the Danish booster protection study that today still is used to promote more or less useless boosters...

Boostered get Omicron 4x more often than unvaxx!! ... Follow the science!.. ADE spike anti-lock immune suppression. (Blocking interferon pathway.)

  • Britain should overhaul its daily Covid death toll to show the vaccination status of victims, say MPs

Britain should show vaccination status of Covid victims who die
MPs also say the casualty toll should be divided into how many had received a booster shot, how many were double-jabbed and how many were unvaccinated.

MPs say toll should be divided into those who had booster, double-jabbed and unvaccinated

Similar model is used by Switzerland and is seen as way to encourage unvaccinated to get jab

Sir Iain Duncan Smith said UK's methods of calculating Covid deaths figures are 'terrible'

Said we should 'break it down' into those who died jabbed or unjabbed

Britain should overhaul its daily coronavirus death figures to split them up by vaccination status, MPs have said.

And the casualty toll should be divided into how many had received a booster shot, how many were double-jabbed and how many were unvaccinated.

Former Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith said the UK's methods of calculating Covid deaths figures are 'terrible' and 'have told a pretty false story'.

'We should break it down – did people die jabbed or unjabbed.

'I'm sure it would encourage better vaccine take-up. You'd be able to say to people for certain – these are your odds of dying if you don't have the jab.'

  • Britain should overhaul its daily coronavirus death figures to split them up by vaccination status, MPs have said.

And the casualty toll should be divided into how many had received a booster shot, how many were double-jabbed and how many were unvaccinated.

This would only be a good idea if the results were shown on a per capita basis, to avoid the base rate fallacy. This is especially important in the UK where most of the population is vaccinated. If 100% of the people were vaccinated, all cases would be breakthrough cases, but that would tell you nothing about the nature of disease. It is also important to break down the statistics by age, because an older vaccinated person is in more danger than a young unvaccinated person.

  • So, besides that AR says no solar cells, I purchased a set of 6 cheap led stake lamps before the revelation and harvested the 6 PV panels. (I also now have 6 NiCd AAAs and some rudimentary electronics.)

I wired in series all six with a couple cm space between them, and they are currently in an old transparent glass powder/candy bowl, quasi-parabolic, facing up. Each PV unit is a glass square with a silk screen and laser like PV structure, silvery on back. They each make 2.5 Voc. In series, they make about 12.6 Voc maximum, (maybe more if pushed but they get hot and Voc drops off at least with incandescent).

An incandescent lamp, Type J 100 W in a swivel lamp with dimming switch is positioned above the PV series. After 10 hours, sufficient for thermal equilibrium, the cells are making 12.4 V DC.

A heavy cardboard clipboard is positioned resting over the opening of the bowl, blocking direct lamplight. The voltage reads 4.93, very steady, then drops to 4.88 when I stood up straight, very steady if I stand still.

I reduce the lamplight by adjusting the dimmer (clipboard still covering the PV) to 1.0 V. The voltage fluctuations arise only when I move, both a bit higher or a bit lower, depending on reflection and interference with the light reaching the cells . (A reminder that the PV are in a glass bowl so much stray light is allowed in). Turning off the incandescent lamp completely reduces the series PV oc to 0.65 V. At this point the Voc of the series panels is extremely sensitive to any illumination source. Where a LED flashlight of typical power gave a poor response when in addition to high illumination from incandescent, now 6 V is easily obtained with reflection from a wooden bench.

As always, the voltage does not fluctuate randomly, but any voltage change is directly related to a change in the illumination of the immediate area.

  • Also, New Zealand... 97 - 99% vaccinated .... and yet forecasting 80,000 cases per day in a 5 million population.... so much for those who say the vaccines would stop this cold if the "damn unvaccinated" would get their jabs.. pandemic of the unvaccinated my ass..

    Straw man.

No-one is saying current vaccines can stop omicron variant some 30 mutations away from original.

The point of the vaccines is (1) protecting people from harm (2) reducing the speed and height of the peak (which is good if you want heath systems to cope).

    (1) is proven even for omicron.

    (2) is more contentious, and also it is a mixed blessing

Tell me who says what you say above? It was not even true for delta. I know no-one in the Uk who has said this after alpha.

Further, all the scientists (and it was reported) were saying they did not know how well vaccines would work on variants. So no-one EVER claimed vaccines would stop omicron in its tracks. The whole idea is scientifically ludicrous. The best you get is that vaccines might make a wave stop a bit sooner in terms of percentage of population infected. e.g. maybe 80% not 90% or whatever. But that is a pretty mild effect.

So whose media feed is saying that scientists say this? And on what evidence, which scientists, etc?
