Spanish study describes ‘Covid tongue’ as coronavirus symptom

An investigation of more than 600 patients found that 25% of cases experienced alterations in the mucous membrane of their mouth

We found changes in the tongue that until then had not been linked to Covid: the tongue is enlarged, it appears swollen, the teeth marks can be seen and it can also be depapillated, with small indentations in the back where the taste buds are flattened. It looks like a tongue with red markings,” explains Nuño González, whose team announced the findings of the research in a press release on Tuesday.

The dermatologist and her colleagues studied 666 Covid patients who were admitted to the Ifema field hospital between April 10 and 25 in 2020. The average age of the patient was around 56 and nearly half were of Latin American origin. All had minor or moderate cases of pneumonia. The study from the doctors found that more than 25% of the patients also presented changes in the oral mucosa (the mucous membrane lining the inside of the mouth) such as transient lingual papillitis (11%), which is a kind of blemish on the tongue, mouth ulcers (7%), tongue inflammation with teeth indentations (7%), burning sensation (5%) and tongue inflammation with patchy depapillation or loss of lingual papillae (4%), according to the results, which were published last September in the British Journal of Dermatology.

The findings, published in PLOS Computational Biology, found that ducks, rats, mice, pigs and chickens had lower or no susceptibility to infection compared to humans.

"Knowing which animals are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 helps us prevent building up animal reservoirs from which the coronavirus can re-emerge at a later date," says Luis Serrano, ICREA Research Professor, Director of the CRG and senior author of the study. "Our findings offer a clue for why minks -- which are closely related to the ferret -- are being infected by the disease, which is probably made worse by their packed living conditions and close contact with human workers."

"Though we also find a potential susceptibility to infection by cats, they don't co-exist with humans in the same conditions as other animals, which may explain why so far there are no known cases of people being infected by their pets," adds Dr. Serrano.

Ten species were studied in this paper. Five species -- humans, cats, ferrets, civets, and dogs -- have had documented cases of infection by SARS-CoV-2. There are no reports of infection in the other five species -- mice, rats, pigs, chickens and ducks.

The researchers used computer modelling to test how the coronavirus uses its spike proteins, which protrude from the surface of the virus, to infiltrate the cells of different animals. The main point of entry on a cell's surface is the ACE2 receptor, which binds with the spike protein through a lock-and-key mechanism. There are many different variants of ACE2 within human populations and across different species.

This article also says:

One domestic healthcare provider, Maccabi Healthcare Services, released an encouraging smaller study on Thursday. It revealed that out of 163,000 Israelis given both shots, only 31 were infected, compared with nearly 6,500 infections among a control group of unvaccinated people.

That means: You are 200 times more likely to be infected without a vaccine. The vaccine works better than originally estimated. Virtually all recent cases are in people who have not been vaccinated.

More vile lies. No source of course. You just make this stuff up, I suppose. You ignore legitimate sources of information such as the Health Min. Since only 0.04% of vaccinated people get sick, all the recent cases were unvaccinated people. The Health Min. shows that cases have fallen from 8,300 to 6,600. Until a few weeks ago, only a small percent of the population was vaccinated, and infections take weeks to be accounted for, so the effect of vaccinations will not show up in the cases or deaths for some time. It usually takes ~6 weeks to die, so most patients dying now were infected before vaccinations began.

With that, the mouthwash and oral antiseptic proved to be a new way of preventing COVID-19 from spreading. According to the researchers, the patients become asymptomatic a few days after starting the antiseptic use protocol: five daily rinses of one minute each.

“PHTALOX is a compound developed that allows the formation of reactive oxygen from molecular oxygen, that is, it transforms oxygen from the oral cavity into reactive oxygen and this molecule is capable of inactivating SARS-Cov-2”, explained the researcher Fabiano Vilhena, during a press conference.

Vilhena, who is also a Sanitary Dentist and Doctor of Oral Biology at USP (the State University of Sao Paulo), explained that “the virus has a clear path inside the body.”

The entry route is via the upper airway, eyes, nose, and mouth. The virus has to stay in someplace to multiply, which are mainly salivary glands, amygdala, and tongue. It is where the virus develops itself and then spreads to the body, following the path of the trachea and going down to the bronchi and causing inflammatory reactions. By preventing the virus from multiplying and advancing, the patient becomes asymptomatic.

In the late 60’s the Lancet described a case of a child with agammaglobulinemia, a condition in which absence of B cells prevent them from producing antibodies, who overcame a measles infection quite normally and did not become re-infected thereafter. We now know that, although this condition can compromise immunity, in that particular case the rest of the immune functions, including T-cells, must have been perfectly up to the job of clearing infection and establishing immune memory without help from antibodies. The importance of T-cells in fighting SARS-CoV-1 and establishing immune memory has also been well documented and discussed in a number of pre-COVID papers from 2017 and earlier [2].

Then, early in April, it was reported that two patients with agammaglobulinemia overcame COVID-19 infections without requiring ventilation [3], prompting the Italian authors to write: “This observation suggests that T‐cell response is probably important for immune protection against the virus, while B‐cell response might be unessential”.

All this should have shifted the focus of efforts towards T-cells at an early stage - the real question is why mainstream media and others continued to focus efforts and narrative on antibodies. Is it because vaccines are good at provoking antibody responses but not so great at generating T-cells? Some of the vaccines presently under trial do elicit some T-cells but it seems that neither the quantity nor variety are hugely impressive.

Does this matter? Apparently so: Research establishments including Yale found that in mild or asymptomatic cases, many T-cells are produced. These were highly varied, responding not just to parts of the Spike, S protein or Receptor Binding Domain but to many other parts of the virus [1, 4-6]. Notably, in these mild cases there were few or no detectable antibodies. Conversely, the severely ill produced few T-cells with less variety but had plenty of antibodies. What is also of interest is that men produced fewer T-cells than women, and unlike women, their T-cell response reduced with age [7].

So why are some people unable to mount a good protective T-cell response? The key to this question might be a 10-year-old Danish study led by Carsten Geisler, head of the Department of International Health, Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Copenhagen [8]. Geisler noted that "When a T cell is exposed to a foreign pathogen, it extends a signalling device or 'antenna' known as a vitamin D receptor, with which it searches for vitamin D,", and if there is an inadequate vitamin D level, "they won't even begin to mobilize." In other words, adequate vitamin D is critically important for the activation of T-cells from their inactive naïve state. The question of whether T-cells might also need a continuing supply of vitamin D to prevent the T-cell exhaustion and apoptosis observed in some serious COVID-19 cases [9] deserves further research

The cause for the discrepancy between the studies was not immediately clear. With Pfizer’s phase 3 trials only checking some 40,000 people, and given Israel’s world-leading vaccination campaign, the data could be some of the best on-the-ground indication yet of the vaccine’s efficacy.

What is astonishing about this article is that there is absolutely no mention of, among many other things, the widespread use of free ivermectin - including for prophylactic application - in many states in India including the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh. Let me also discuss two strategic interventions, out of many, which we have taken. The first is the widespread use of the drug, ivermectin, not just for treatment of cases but also as a prophylactic. The state government provides free medicines to all patients in home isolation or in government COVID-19 facilities, which have more than 1.5 lakh beds. We have used the combination of ivermectin and doxycyclin to successfully treat over three lakh home-isolated patients with mild symptoms so far. This combination has also been used by the hospitals across the state for admitted COVID-19 patients. But what is more interesting is the state’s successful use of ivermectin as a prophylactic.
